when you and someone discuss buying something, they seem to be in agreement, provide you with contact information, then turn around and tell you, oh nevermind. I sold those items? I really hate it when that happens...

It happens all the time. That's the game when one is trying to purchase a high-demand item.

If the seller is getting multiple WTB replies, he or she is likely to pick the buyer most favourable to him or her; the criteria applied may include shipping distance, price offered, past history, seller feedback, or something as inane as the potential buyer's screen name.

thats a pretty crappy way to do things if you ask me. If I make an agreement with someone then its solid. I know you cant shakes hands via the internet, but I was raised on the idea that a handshake it Texas is as good as a contract in any state.

That would be a great way for things to be. Unfortunately I've been on the other side way too many times and end up passing up several other offers because I thought and was promised it was sold and end up with a deal falling through.

On a reef forum I've taken up the position that I'll sell it to who I want for whatever reason. It's mine to sell. Not that I don't sell often to newbies, just very strict about how the transaction is to be completed.

I was once involved in a transaction with someone selling a high-demand item over the web. I wasn't first to reply, but I really wanted it so I offered more than he was asking and offered to pick it up immediately. I now own the item.

That was you?!?

Kidding...

I hate when people turn it into an auction when a price has been posted and agreed upon. I've sold all kinds of stuff (from all my different hobbies) on various forums and craigslist, etc. Even though I usually get higher offers, I've never accepted an offer over what I've posted and agreed upon, and I've always only dealt with the first to call dibs (unless they back out for some reason). Unfortunately, I haven't always been treated the same way.

But, from a seller's point of view, I have had people string me along only to finally tell me they can't buy it, for whatever reason. Hate that too...

It goes both ways. A promise is only good as long as it's kept by both parties. I must agree that I hate when a seller agrees upon a price then turns around and wages a bidding war to see who offers more.

If you want something bad enough, I would take it upon myself to give the seller more incentive to sell to you, not necessarily monetary incentives. I've had many many buyers string me along for days just to have them flake out, that is such an annoyance as I put other serious buyers on stand by for them.
