If you're waiting for that holy grail of photo editing and transmitting applications to show up on the iPad, then you'll be interested in this good read by Camera Bits (Photo Mechanic) president, Dennis Walker. He details why it can't happen right now and who can fix it/is to blame (hint: It's a fruit). Rob Galbraith DPI: Camera Bits rules out iPad version of Photo Mechanic

btw at&t just annoucing on june 7 they have no more unlimited data plan for iphone / ipad.
So you get 2gb for $25...unless you already had it but I'm sure they will phase those out soon too.

hmmm well found an article on this: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100602/tc_nm/us_att_3
but it says if you're already on the $30 plan, they won't be cancelling, it's going to apply to new customers. they do say that iPad users won't get to keep it though.
I guess the question has to be what is going to happen to contract extensions with the new iPhone or any other smartphone?

Here's a link describing the new plans: AT&T iPhone Tethering: An Extra $20/Month—If You Abandon Unlimited Data
If you're wanting to talk about it, I suggest starting a new thread as I'm sure there's plenty of people that will want to chime in on it.
And before you go bashing AT&T (which I'll agree deserves it), expect other carriers to follow suit. It was only a matter of time...

I love how the president of Camera Bits pretty much said, get a Windows netbook and Android is the future.
The iPhone is awesome for what is does. I can't wait until Android gets some of the really "cool" apps and makes the UI a little more appealing.

That really sucks. One of the only reasons i would have considered an ipad would have been for the cheap unlimited 'net.

I fired up my $15 200MB iPad 3G plan the day I got it, and a month later I had used about 180MB. Worked out just perfect for me - and I use it a TON. It'll really depend on how much you're away from home, and what you're doing away from home. In my case, it was using the maps app and har.com a lot (house hunting), streaming music from Shoutcast.com while searching (if you load it via the web page, it'll play in the background while you open other apps!), and general goofing around. I figured I'd run out of 200MB within a few days, but that wasn't the case.
If you think the 200MB cap is too low, I'd honestly suggest you look at your bill and see what you actually use. It might be lower than you think.

Come on, let's be serious, the iPad was never designed for "pros" to use as an editing platform chugging away at 30MB RAW files. To bash it for that is like buying a KIA because you want basic transportation and being pissed off you can't run with the Ferrari's.
It's designed for the masses that want their photos with them ala iPhoto and the automatic syncing it does and most likely jpg. With the available apps you can do basic cropping and crap like that, more than enough for most mom, dad, and kids kind of stuff. Heck, just look at Facebook and see what kids think good photography of themselves is these days.
If there is one thing that does not make sense is why they don't allow you to easily use it as a backup device. With the Connectivity Kit you could use either the SD card or a usb reader and dump on the go and then dump to your home system later. Not so, you have to go through iTunes and it's a mess. A simple Finder level file system that allowed for easy file transfers would be a win. There are third party apps that allow iPad use as a hard drive but they don't play well with the Connectivity Kit yet. But if anyone finds info on that, please post it here!

One thing I found funny is he is talking about using 60MB of ram to work with an uncompressed image. Why uncompressed? Way back in the 1990s I was using an image editing package on OS/2 that used in memory compression to run on very little ram. Heck, full resolution 8x10 scans being edited in memory on a 16MB 486DX50, and that was with other apps running!
Now I agree with the post above in that I can not really believe "pros" would be interested in an iPad for editing or delivery of images anyway. I know I am not. But where I think the iPad will shine is as a portable portfolio. No matter how much faster or more capable a full blown laptop may be, it will not have anywhere near the wow factor with customers as the iPad.
