Well, I loved maybe two or three shots, liked a small handful and thought the majority looked like stuff my mom shot with her disposable camera. She could weed that whole mess down to about 15 images and have a killer portfolio. As it stands, it looks like another wannabe who doesn't know how to self-edit. Thanks for sharing the link, though...

the portrait section was most disappointing given the unparalleled level of access that her status would afford her.

Undoubtably surrounded by nothing but "yes" men who would not give her the proper critique that the images deserve. Some gems in there, but you have to weed through too many to get there

The portrait section*edit* was my favorite actually. The fact that she had access to world leaders and chose to take pictures of (or at least post the pictures of) ordinary people and family and friends more actually speaks more about her skills than if she was just a famous person who took snapshots of all her high society friends. Pretty much any photographer with a camera and some skill can take pictures of beautiful movie stars with their makeup artists and wardrobe people, but it's quite another thing to take pictures of ordinary people without a studio and the minimalist approach. Some of them look like they were pretty old too so for all we know they were taken while she was growing up with who knows what type of equipment.

Wait....what?
It's a lot easier to take photos of ordinary people without a studio vs beautiful movies stars with a full crew of people.
If you don't believe me, just try it and see.

Tipper's photography is somewhere above average and below great(imho).

Well I guess I'll have to wait until I'll shoot a set full of movie stars and let you know how it goes. The closest I come to that is having a makeup artist do a particular look and I just set up some lights and shoot it. The final results maybe good (or not) but my point is that I had help in making the subject look good where as in the style she's shooting it's a lot more personal.

The worst is when I see online portfolios which are mostly pictures taken in workshops where the model was all prettied up, posed, and all they did was borrow the pocket wizard and they pretty much did nothing. Compared to them, I'll take Tipper any day.

PS. I've borrowed people's setups before too at times so I don't exclude myself from this lol.

Her access has nothing to do with her level of photographic skill. She enjoys taking photos and that's what she did. I can appreciate that aspect.

I've shot stars and I can tell you that it doesn't get too much easier. The only thing that helps is that they tend to warm up to the camera faster, maybe because they are in front of one all the time? However, it still takes skill to shoot them, I promise!

I also appreciate that someone has an interest in the photographic arts. However, based on her website, I would never think about hiring her for a photo assignment.

On a side note, we shouldn't forget her disregard for the first amendment, when she tried to censor the entire music industry back in the late 1980's and early 1990's. She's not top on my list of awesome people...

I have a lot of respect for a woman who, at 61, has the courage to show the world her work, knowing that, as a public figure, people will scrutinize her more than if she was just another photographer.

I wonder how people on this forum would had responded if she had become a member of TPF and introduced herself with her website. Would the first set of responses be what I see above? "would never hire her" "looks like another wannabe..." "she's not top on my list of awesome people"

How easy it is to be judgmental of others!

I would quickly and gladly tell her that the biggest problem that I faced early on was not being critical enough of my own work, and that it was only in showing it to others that I became better as a self editor in selecting the works that I liked. If she was to walk through the door of my house right now I would first of all be surprised that Tipper Gore was in Slaton, TX, but I would also be honest with her about being a bit more choosy.

I am not near as judgemental of others as I am of myself.

I am harder on myself than I was on her work. I might've put it in more polite terms if she was the one who posted, asking for a critique. I also would've provided more guidance and tips on how to improve things, instead of just stating what wasn't working. However, I still would said the same basic thing. I just cut to the chase and stated it more bluntly, since she'll never see this thread.

I'd say the same thing whether she's the first, second or third lady or someone here. Once again,

Eh...
