Exclamation My Dad has Cancer - 06-07-2010, 10:24 AM

I have been trying really hard to pull together a benefit for him, to help with expenses and show him that people are here for him. He has stage 3 colon cancer and needs chemo in july. There are no resources to help him with this. So I been going around asking for donations or people to come to our benefit. The beneit is located in Dayton, Texas at the silver dollar saloon on June 26th. Please contact me if you are interested.

Kelly....I am sorry to hear this...but if I can answer any questions for your father let me know...I had stage 3-C colon cancer in 2005 and went thru 6 months of chemo...every other week for three days strait...I was diagnosed at age 31...I did my treatments at Saint Luke’s in the medical center...It's been 5 years...and several people I went thru it with are still around...older and younger...so tell him not to lose faith...the treatments work...(why are you waiting for July....did not have the colorectal-rescission...surgery...??)

Three things for you...to make sure he does...buy order of importance...

1) Never miss...a treatment...(unless the doctor tell you, you can't have the treatment due to white-blood cell count)...everyone that I know that missed a treatment because they did not feel like it or decided to go on vacation...has had a relapse or did not make it...everyone that did not do this...I am still in contact with...

2) Make him eat...even if he does not feel like eating or drinking...(he will gain weight..I did 80 lbs)...but its better than the alternative...!!!

3) Have him continue working on a limited basis...or have him do something for you...(this helped me keep my mind off everything...really was a blessing...I did not think about the treatments as much...and it made me get out of bed even if I did not want too...)

I don't know what treatment he is taking...mine was Folfox...the biggest thing is you loose your sensation in your hands and feet...make sure someone checks the water in the bath...if it's too cold...you can lose total sensation...to hot you can get burned...I did the second...and had two-degree burns on my arm...from the water being too hot...(felt so stupid at the time)...also he will have to learn to drink liquids w/o ice...make sure and do this...I forgot again...about this...and my throat and mouth were numb for a week....research online about it...(I am sure you have done this..)...but it is manageable...

DON'T GIVE UP or LET HIM GIVE UP...!!!

I promised myself if I made it thur the chemo...and thru my second year check-ups...that I would get back-into photography...so here I am...happy everyday...!!!

Thank you for the good ideas and info. We just have a problem getting to the chemo part, since he has no insurance. He is disabled so they said he can qualify for medicaid BUT they TAKE YOUR HOUSE AND PROPERTY! So we don't want to go that route thats all they have.

Kelly,

First you need to get the property out of his & Spouces name...place it into a trust or deed it to sibling...or put it into life estate deed...you can write it that it is owned by another party...but he owns the rights till death of him and spouce....this will protect him and at that point he does not have any assets...and can qualify for other means of payments...check with an estate attorney though...the rules governing these things have changed the last few years...and you have to do it right...

Yeah they have a time limit that you can do it and they are watching you if you do that. I wouldn't risk it.

Having gone through cancer of loved ones more times than I want to think about... you have my deepest sympathies. Its going to be hard no matter what the outcome. Best hopes sent your way.
