How to move a blog? Need Advice - 06-07-2010, 04:02 PM

Let me explain what I've done and wanting to do.

When we first started our portrait business we used the ProPhoto Blog as a website. It served its purpose. Now we have another website we want to install in place of the ProPhoto Blog site. Let's say our url is www.domainname.com. I've already installed WordPress in the new location (www.domainname.com/blog). What I want to do is move the ProPhoto Blog and all of its contents to www.domainname.com/blog.

Is there an easy way to accomplish this?

I've never tried to move it, but here are some how-to's.

Oooh Sonny, I have moved a few blogs.
Blog A to Blog B; Version X of this one to Version Y of that one.
It really depends on what you have access to, so Good luck with that one!
Do you have / can you get a full copy of your DB?
Without that, anf IF your current blog has a lot of content, its going to make it a nightmare!
If its just primarily images, then I wouild go from scratch.

If you are paying for a custom theme, contact the author of it to make sure they are already testing with the new WP 3.0 RC1, and that your theme will be converted or compatible with 3.0. I am installing 3.0 this weekend to mess around with it.

The 20D is still rocking! Thanks again!

First of all, thank you Larry for the link!

Hi...my name is Sonny and I'm a guy that likes to complicate simple situations.

Before Larry posted his link, I found a video explaining how to move your blog from the root to a different directory. In short I had to create new directory. Move all WordPress associated files into new directory. Export tables to a SQL database. Open the SQL DB and edit every single URL to reflect the changes. Delete original tables. Import the edited SQL DB to restore tables. Cross fingers and pray like hell. This process wasn't really complicated, but there was a good chance you could mess something up. It was just a PITA. After following this video I was able to access my website but none of the photos were showing up. UGH! My prayers didn't work. I moved all my files back where to their original location and restored the SQL DB from a saved back-up. Whew! Back to normal.

This morning I gave Larry's link a try...here's the "hey retard, you should of started here" part. On step 4 of the link it tells you change the WordPress address (URL). As soon as I did that a message popped up with a link specifically for doing this process pertaining to the ProPhoto Blog. DUUUUR!

This time it was an EASY three step process and everything worked!
