suggestions for GOOD glamour? - 06-11-2010, 11:43 PM

First off, do NOT suggest some total crap site like model mayhem - this is not a joke thread. Next, do you have any websites/blogs that you go to for inspiration regarding glamour and high fashion shooting? I don't really do that kind of stuff, but am looking to introduce some sort of new inspiration... thought some glamour/fashion shooting might spark something in me.

i like browsing sites like imgfave - amazing and inspiring images, FFFFOUND!, and Tumblr - though it isn't all photography. there is a lot of design and illustration work as well, but if do a bit of sifting you'll often find users whose tastes suit your own. there is a lot of high fashion photography on any of those sites.

it's a lot of fun to browse. :D

You obviously don't know what you're talking about.

I wish I had the talent and creativity of some of the photographers registered with Modelmayhem. For example:

Actually, you just proved my point. You posted ten images. I loved one, thought two more were OK at best, couldn't view one without being a member, and the other six were kind of blah/boring/crappy/terrible. At least you gave me a stack of photos that doesn't fit the average "booty pic' I have seen on MM in the past...

Anyway, I guess I should've said I am looking for GREAT glamour and fashion, not good, not average and definitely not blah/college kid. I will check out Jezebel's suggestions right now and hope to find some fun stuff. Thanks!

Vogue (US and foreign), Victoria's Secret catalog & Elle.

To be quite honest with you, what you're looking for is only going to come from professional photographers shooting with a big support staff and budget. That usually doesn't come for free either. Of course that's JMHO.

Well here's a guy you can follow that does glamore/models for a living. He's all over the place, one of the fortunate ones if thats what you're after. What I like about him is the pictures he posts. Some are just normal what's happening pictures then he posts his work. He really seems like a cool guy and follows beautiful women around the world.

Welcome to Facebook

Ops... Forgot to mention he shots for Victoria Secrets among other high profile photography.

I guess I wasn't clear enough in the beginning, because this is exactly what I tried to ask for - are there any blogs or websites that are following the current top fashion shooters?

I already knew that I could thumb through the top fashion mags and books (I already planned on picking up the history of Vogue magazine book, next time I'm up at HPB). I knew I had to look at the best from shooters for vogue and their peers. I just didn't know if any of the current Vogue-level shooters had good websites or blogs to follow. I've already followed the old school shooters like Helmet Newton, by checking out or buying their books. I'm not looking for all the wannabe fashion shooters hanging out on MM. I want to be inspired...

I would say that what he's done is show that you have differing ideals of what is "good glamour" as you said. The images he posted might be OUTSTANDING images on levels that he strives to achieve. I know there are a few photographers on MM that I always enjoy looking at their work.

What it doesn't mean is that it's "garbage" or "crap". The site is very beneficial. If you choose not to use it that's your own decision. But to simply call it crap and thusly chastise anyone who does is ridiculous.

lol this is the recap of this thread:

You: Model mayhem is crap, I want the best glamour pictures ever
Forum: model mayhem isn't bad, give it a chance, here are some work
You: no! no! no! you stupid. I said I want great photographers (like me!)
Forum: Most famous pros don't just put out their stuff in a blog, they work for publications
You: No no no no no no I don't want to read a book, books are stupid.
Forum: ok then here is duckface for you

Seriously though Jason, I don't know what your deal is. You come here asking for help while at the same time belittling the work of thousands of photographers on modelmayhem and then you get all snippy when people try to answer your question and point out that you could be wrong. If you already know so much about the subject you're looking for, why ask?

You are right. Saying "crap" was a copout. I should've said that I'm not looking to be inspired by photographers who are still learning and honing their craft. They may be making some errors and not getting everything right yet, but that doesn't make it crap.

However, having visited MM several times over the years when someone sends/posts a link to a photo there, I have always been surprised by the amount of really low quality, and somewhat trashy, images. But, like anything else in the world, there must be a certain amount of good and great work there. As pointed out with the ten sample links above, one out of ten shots was actually great. I won't knock it, but I still don't feel like wading through the nine other images just to see one.

But, thanks... I won't say crap when the term doesn't really apply.

You have way missed the mark here. Let me clarify your comments, point by point:

I've already discussed the poor choice of using the term crap when speaking about average or just OK images. They aren't crap, and I rescinded that. And, yes... I want the best. Nothing wrong with being inspired by the best. Clapton, Van Halen, Mayer, Vaughn and other great guitarists have all listed amazing musicians as their inspiration. Current NBA stars have listed Jordan and Dr J as their inspiration. Why look at an average musician, basketball player or photographer to inspire you? Look as high up as you can!

I looked at the MM work, when it was posted in this thread. I've also visited the site many times over the years. I have given it a fair chance. I've seen a LOT of stuff like this: Where Professional Models Meet Model Photographers - ModelMayhem which is far from what I want to be inspired by.

And, I never called anyone stupid. That is unfair to try and change my comments. And yes, I DO want to be inspired by great photographers, though I never said I was one. As a matter of fact, I mentioned in my very first post that I don't really do fashion shooting. I'm not sure how you inferred that I am a GREAT fashion photog from the statement that I don't do fashion shooting?!? If you said that you don't eat meat, I wouldn't infer that you were a great bow hunter...

First off, I asked for blogs or websites. Even if a pro doesn't have a blog (which some do to help boost their SEO even more), they still have an online portfolio worth looking at. If you wanted to be inspired by one of the best music photogs currently working, you'd go here: Mark Seliger
He even has some fashion portfolios up, but that's beside the point. In addition, even if the photog doesn't personally keep (or have someone at his studio to keep) a blog, often there will be a publication or industry blog that regularly runs info/images/videos on them... like this: Profoto Blog. Light explored.

I never said that I didn't want to read a book. Quite the opposite. I even have a post above that clearly states I have books and plan to pick up another regarding the subject at hand. I really don't know where you got this idea from?!? Besides, I was looking for pointers towards websites and blogs that I may have missed with the standard google searches, not books. I know the books that I want to currently look at.

And, funny thing is... the way the world is going, I wouldn't be surprised if you start seeing the duckface popping up in fashion ads before too long. Fashion photogs always seem to find a way of taking the worst of the real world and turning it into the best/most edgy high fashion... You could probably make a name for yourself by introducing the duckface look into the next D&G campaign!

Anyway, as far as getting snippy, I think this is the first post that is snippy by me. The others may have been misread by you, but this is the first I've had to take with a frustrated tone.
