Sailors in the house

This is a discussion on Sailors in the house within the Open Talk forums, part of the General Information category; From the Abby thread it appears we have some sailors on board (obvious pun). Who sails, and what's your sport?...

wifey and i just started. i've been sailing since i was a teenager. mainly lasers and a nacra 5.7 cat. been in some regattas up north where i grew up. up north not being dallas, but being lake of the woods. sailed the apostle islands up north as well.

wifey is getting accustomed and we took some classes together. i was trying to get a boat (still am) but wifey is putting her foot down. i'd like to cruise the world. we have enough money now to do it for a good amount of time. i just keep hearing all these excuses like money, jobs, responsibility...whatever that means...

what's your poison digi?

most likely we'll be in the bay for some time and venture out for a bareboat charter here and there somewhere nifty in the world.

Yes. And spruce, white cedar and black locust.

All of my photos online went down the drain when Sony bailed out of the hosting business. I'll get my act together and put them back up.

Conor, do it now. Whatever it is, do it NOW! One day you'll wake up, older than dirt, still saying "Coulda, shoulda, woulda." Do it NOW!

Currently this, but it's for sale. Wife wants a real toilet, bimini, and air conditioner.

Fastest speed has been 19.4 knots planing downwind. Front 1/3 of the boat was lifted out of the water!

No spruce, locust or mahogony though. All plastic (frp) and carbon fiber.

Roger that. I hope D is reading.

I've been re-evaluating our lives. what is the point of having jobs and working? mmmm...there is no point. besides making money so we can live in the devil's paradise, so we can have a job.

Let's see...$30k for decent boat, another $20k or so for outfitting. skip the gen, a/c, watermaker (we're relatively young). we're at $50k for a boat (obviously, not an OVNI). maybe we can get something cheaper? we are in a recession aren't we? i'd wave some greenbacks under the seller's nose and let him savor the sensation. spend a year outfitting/last saving surge. sell house, move on boat. retire.

assuming i do no odds and ends work, we've got enough savings to cruise comfortably for about 15 years or so. we'd have to watch our pennies, but who doesn't? heck, if we only made it to the caribbean and to brazil it would be worth it. i've got it all planned out in my head, but there is really only one true way to know if it will work.

daily list of things to do:

wake up
go snorkeling
take pictures
plan next trip
take nap
snorkeling
take nap
catch fish
make dinner
take pictures of sunset
fall asleep

repeat.

You forgot a few items on your list...............wicked grin......oh, I see nap time.

Based on what I've seen lately without even really shopping, I reckon you could get something around 35' from the 70s, built like a tank, assuming no osmosis in the gel coat for under $20k. Maybe way under. Which would leave $30k or maybe less for tip-top first class outfitting: new sails, canvas, running rigging, etc.

Holy Cow! What is that Rocket Sled? That would be fun once or twice. Then I would be spoiled.

The Rocket Sled is a Rocket 22. It is fast. In addition to the 19.4 under spinnaker, we've hit 13+ knots under main and jib.

LOA 22'
LWL 21'6"
Beam 9'6"
Draft 5'10" (retracts for trailering)
Disp 1870
Ballast 800 (with 700 in the bulb)
Rig - Carbon with alum boom, 60 lbs,
Working sails - 242 sq ft. main, 140 sq ft. jib
Spinnaker - 640 sq ft. asymetrical, 605 sq ft. symetrical
Carbon sprit, carbon spinnaker pole, carbon tiller
Rig tension adjusts on the fly with a mast jack
All lines led under deck

It's fun and easy to sail all the time, not just once or twice! I've raced and sailed it with my pre-teen kids and wife. The speed is addicting. I'm going to miss it.

So now I know who to get to teach me to sail. I've always wanted to learn to sail.

In the first pic above, we were doing 15-16 regularly that day. It was our first day of racing the boat. Broached a few times too. I've sailed the Rocket, with spinnaker, in winds of 30 gusting to 40. Downwind it just lifts its bow, kicks up a rooster tail, and gets real quiet. Then, after a while it broaches and the sails make a lot of noise flapping around. Get her back on her feet and take off again.

In light to medium winds it is a ***** cat.

The new boat may be a Beneteau 31. If not that, then Catalina 320.

Overnight accomodations, shaded cockpit, rigged for single handing, a/c at the dock. Basically a cocktail boat. Not as fast, better for entertaining.

Make you a deal on a Rocket?

I grew up sailing on lakes. Dinghies and keel boats. But it's been a loooong time, so I'm somewhat rusty. Have considered getting back into it, but money is always a consideration. I don't know....maybe. I'd be sailing single handed a lot, and that's a bit of a challenge with a big keel boat on a small lake. Not interested in dinghy.

Familiar with those. There are actually three - one was struck by lightning, one is too old, and the other bent the rudder stock hitting a rock. None meet my criteria. My boat's on Grapevine as well.
