Exclamation The 50mm Photo Challenge - With Prizes! - 06-20-2010, 07:31 PM

I was recently awed by a photographer who shot a number of photos with nothing but a 50mm 1.8 lens. Granted it was on a full frame camera, but I was simply amazed. I'm so used to my zooms, that my 50mm (or Brit's rather) doesn't get much use. After seeing that photographers photos, I was inspired to get mine out and try to use it more. And after searching I found THIS THREAD from some years ago.

So here is the updated 2010 version, with prizes!

1. You may ONLY use a 50mm lens, (or use a zoom at 50mm for those of you who don't have one.)
2. You may only submit ONE photo.
3. Entries MUST be shot during the submission period. (no shots from three years ago.)
4. Your entry MUST be SOOC - no cropping, no processing, no adjustments whatsoever. The only exception to this rule is 'in camera' filters such as monochromatic, and the various tints you can apply, etc, and 'websizing'.
5. Your entry must follow contest submission rules below.

Here is the submission rules:

1. You can only submit ONE photo.
2. Your photo must be taken between the submission dates.
3. Your entry must ONLY be the photo, and complete exif info, no other commentary about the shot.
4. Your entry must be emailed to me at chris@themodernmutt.com before midnight on July 12th. Please attach the image and includ the exif info your message. Images will be posted without owner information, for anonymity. Owners of the photos will be identified after the contest has ended.

Submission dates: Monday June 21st, through Monday July 12th at Midnight. (three weeks.)

At the end of the submission period a separate thread with a poll will be created where the general membership can vote on their favorite photo. The top three will receive a FREE premium membership!

I asked Abel for a single premium membership for the single winner, and he was generous enough to offer one to the top three finishers, so everyone give him a great big THANK YOU!

I hope this inspires everyone young and old, beginner to professional to get out there and try something new!

ETA: I guess the only subject restriction would be human form photos, since this thread is in the general public's view. So no hooters. Sorry fella's.

I have a 30mm which is about "normal" on my Olympus... that would make it fair if I were to stick with prime.

Or I have 2 lenses that zoom through 50mm - if I manage what the exif calls 49mm is that close enough?

I'm heading on a vacation in this time period so I will have lots of opportunities :-)

I don't have a 50mm lens

Can I substitute an 80mm lens on medium format?

Come on guys, the rules are pretty simple. Exif must say focal length is 50mm. Whether it is a prime or zoom is up to you as well as what body it is mounted to. The whole point of this kind of challenge is that you have to be more creative since you're limited on hardware choices. If 50mm isn't wide enough you're going to have to back up. I haven't gotten my 50 out of the bag in a long time, but I dusted it off last night because I thought this sounded fun.

You've got a 4/3's sensor, so your going to have to back up a little further than those of us with a 1.6 crop body.

If you dont have a way to get your exif, you can download a free copy of Opanda HERE. Just open a picture using this program, copy the exif, and paste it in the thread under your picture.

I'm in the same boat you are with a D90. I did an experiment yesterday with my D90 and a D700. I never realized how much of an image a crop body cuts out. But, we'll just have to back up a few steps... but not as far as the 4/3's guy's....

I'll have to see if I can find an adapter to mount it on the Hasselblad

Seriously though, the idea is cool, but I think you shouldn't just consider the 50mm focal length. But it's your parade and you can march to the drummer of your choice!

Originally I thought about it only being a 'nifty fifty' challenge, but I realized that not everyone, especially beginners, will have one. So thats how it came to be the generic 50mm challenge.

This is my kinda contest, i use my 50mm 99% of the time anyway. I dont care if its actually a 100mm 1.8 on my Oly, its still my favorite.
