Elderly parents or loved one and use on of the senior alerts like Life Alert or Life Station. Mom is fine but step dad is 88 and just HAS to go outside even in this heat and work on the yard or garden, well he has fallen in the yard twice in the last few days and we are worried sick about it.
Tonight he fell about 5:45 and laid there for about 20 min in the heat we think one of the alerts would help alot so if moms not home and something happens.
Man Life Alert (the fallen and I cant get up) sure has some nasty reviews lol
TIA

My parents have Life Alert and have used it several times, but they won't wear the buttons which come with the system. They have called Life Alert by using the emergency buttons on the phone unit each time. I'm also concerned about the range that it is effective. I encourage my Dad to keep his cell phone charged and have it with him at all times. My Mom is now in a nursing home. Dad is 90 and is still driving at present.

I'll be curious to know what you think about what you chose. I, too, have elderly parents and an elderly aunt in the area and this is an issue for us as well.

My Dad, who is 90, bought a system that calls his local 911 direct-base station at the house and a call unit that he carries with him around the house and outside- there are no monthly "fees" just the cost of the unit and you are hooked into your own 911 service. I have not seen it since he bought just a few weeks ago so not sure if he can talk to 911 or if it sends a taped message to them. I'll find out what the name is of the system.
Yeah with this heat it can get serious pretty fast outside from just falling down to a lot worse.

Thanks for the input yall I am leaning towards Life Station NO setup fees and 33.95 a month you can cancel anytime with 30 days notice. That gets you TWO remotes one for mom too lol and base station and a lock box for a door key in case 911 responders need to get in, I called them yesterday and actully a REAL LIVE person answered the phone lol. I will keep yall posted

My dad has dementia and when he was first diagnosed we shopped around for some kind of alert system. We ended up choosing Life Alert and are very pleased with the service. They were constantly on top of things every time dad pushed the button.
We came across a site that posted some bad reviews of life alert. At first I thought it was legit, but I found out it’s a bogus website that gets paid to attract people to their site by bad-mouthing companies. Besides, I doubt Life Alert would have been in business as long as it has and with such a reputable name if those complaints were true.
We decided to sign up with Life Alert because they have an A+ rating with the BBB and is a very reputable company – and we could add a fire/burglar system any time.
What was more surprising is their cost is really competitive, actually inexpensive! And we didn’t have to compromise on the quality of the service for dad based on cost. We are very happy.
The bottom line is we went with the best and we haven’t regretted it! Hope this helps with your research. Good Luck.

Thanks Cathy. Good info.
And, gosh, your screen name dredged up a memory of a long lost doll from childhood...named, of course, Chatty Cathy. Too funny.

My mom had life alert, and it DID work for her on one occasion, so I guess that alone made it worth the money.
Keep in mind though that it isn't for every situation. At one point my mom desperately needed help, but she was too sick to realize it. Fortunately, a neighbor did realize it, and called 911.
After that incident, she was hospitalized for a time, then moved to a nursing home. During that time, we kept her apartment. Somehow the power strip for the Life Alert box got turned off. Life Alert realized there was a problem, so they started calling her phone leaving messages that there was a problem with her system. THEY DID THAT DAILY FOR MORE THAN 3 WEEKS! They never once tried to contact me or the authorities during that time!
I finally called them, described the situation, and asked why they didn't notify emergency services when they repeatedly failed to contact her. They didn't even seem to understand the problem! They knew her system wasn't working, yet all they could do was use their automated system to flood her machine with messages? FAIL!
All this to say that it's maybe better than nothing, but I can't say anything better than that for them.

I know some cities fire depts will come to the homes of elderly and install the lockboxes for the front door keys for no charge. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
