Incorporating Video into a Photography Business - 06-22-2010, 04:09 PM

Is there anyone on this forum incorporating video into their still photography business for pay? Not for marketing purposes, or a value added service to their normal coverage.
I mean, is there anyone expanding their business with DSLR videos as an added revenue stream to their normal business?

You don't have to give away your secrets. I am trying to find anyone doing this new thing.

I'm not, but I can tell you that videographers are doing the opposite. We just did a wedding on Friday evening, and the videographer came up to me and said "Do you mind if we take some still photos for the video? They aren't for sale, we just use them periodically while editing." She shot with a fairly nice Canon.

Someone was playing with that a while ago...Was it Rob? Search the business thread. He had just started doing it several months ago. Not sure if he got it where he wanted to go or not.

I am, but only recently. Just booked two deals in the past month with video as a major component of the shoot. I worked hard to find a niche, so I'll share some info with you, but can't give out ALL the data. You can PM me for details, but I'll make you sign an NDA (just kidding).

The ASMP Dallas chapter is putting together a workshop and seminar on this very subject. However, it probably won't happen until November...

Would you let me know if this happens with ASMP?

I know of another group in Dallas holding a seminar for incorporating Video into a portrait and wedding world. But they are bringing in a videographer who does not have ANY portrait or wedding business experience. I think this could be a help with the technical side or developing video skills. But I can't see how this will help us sell video ideas to our customers. I need to know what I can sell to my customers AND if they will they buy it.

My main world is Video and motion graphics. My photography has just recently begun to leap in the same area as my field.

Now, I have been a video production person for a little over 6 years now.

My main niche is Live Events. Stage presentations with different companies, setting up multi camera operations with projectors, screens, intrique lighting and so forth.

Those events almost always come with a still photographer as well. I have just started a new company on my own and began presenting both video and photo as one entity. Of course given a client the option to omit one or the other.

My full time gig is the same way. We do video and photo for Oil & Gas companies. Yet another place that requires and requests for both.

So, there is a market for both if you are in the right area. Obviously, wedding and quice's are in that market as well.

I'm just more for commercial and corporate.

Oh for the DSLR video side, I have worked with some Camera Ops that have at times brought a Canon 7D on set. It was an interesting setup.

I think give it another year and that will really become a nice video option. Of course it still wont beat large budget video productions that utilize the Red Camera. Now that's a beast.

Here's a link for those of you who do not know what the RED Camera is - > http://www.red.com/

By the way, Bolt Productions is hosting a free dslr video seminar at the end of the month... the 29th, I think. Jerry Ward, the Pro Canon Rep, will be there. Look up Bolt online to see how to register for the event.
