AT&T - Verizon - Sprint (Download & Upload speed test) - 06-25-2010, 02:30 PM

I have a coworker who constantly brags about how fast his Sprint HTC Evo is so, myself and three other co-workers did a test to see who's network provider/phone was quicker.

We all downloaded the Ookka SpeedTest.net to do our test.
We tested inside an one story building and 3 different outside location. (2 miles from each location)

Me - iPhone 4 (3G)
JJ - Verizon Eris (3G)
JD - Sprint HTC Evo (3G) (He couldn't even get 4G network connection)
MB - Sprint Samsung Moment (3G)

Here are the top best speed of the four test. (I'll post pics of the phones with the test results later)

iPhone 4 - AT&T
Download (2.17 mbps)
Upload (1.22 mbps)

Verizon Eris
Download (0.97 mbps)
Upload (0.83 mbps)

Sprint Samsung Moment
Download (0.38 mbps)
Upload (0.09 mbps)

Sprint HTC Evo
Download (0.20 mbps)
Upload (0.09 mbps)

Needless to say, I'm VERY pleased with AT&T and iPhone 4. :)

PCmag did a test based on different regions and it comfirms our test results.

That's kind of cool to know... guess I'll stop complaining at how long it takes my iphone to load something.... I always compare it to my pc of course... which is stupid... lol... but I still do it. ;-)

That is interesting...my verizon mifi (for computer) works 10x faster than the at&t card I had. Maybe it is just my area or something?

It'll be different for everyone. EVDO vs 3g ATT/TMO, 3g will win in speed. Now, enter 4g for Sprint/Clearwire and soon to be LTE, I just did a test inside an office building with an EVO and I am able to get 2.7 Mbit/s download and .4 Mbit/s upload.

With my Droid from Verizon, .8 Mbit/s and .4 Mbit/s. Depending on the technology and the amount of traffic on the towers, your speed will fluctuate.

Now put it all on wifi, it's irrelevant :)

To add, 4g is not available in all the major cities, by the end of the year, Clearwire(WiMax) is to be available in approx 80 cities, while 3g/edge and the EVDO(used by Sprint, Verizon, Cricket(if im not mistaken) technology have coverage just about everywhere.

A comparison of the services is basically comparing apples to oranges. Speed test numbers are good to know, but again, depending on the area, network traffic/congestion, distance to the tower, etc, numbers will fluctuate.

Another addition:
A friend of mine who sits next to me has a Nexus One with Tmobile and his speeds are 3Mbit/s down and 1Mbit/s up.

I get pretty good 4G coverage in San Antonio now, at least on the north side of it. I do have problems every once in a while when I get onto Randolph AFB. Almost like there is a curtain at the gate that just won't let it in. It's starting to show up a little on base now but still iffy.

To add if you're teetering on either the EVO or iPhone 4, check out this review by Engadget pitting to the 2 against each other. Also, if you are wanting a smartphone, each of the carriers have a 14 day return period for the hardware, keep in mind, you may be prorated the data fees for the 14 days.

iPhone 4 or EVO 4G: which one should you get? -- Engadget

Yeah, I'm a phone geek. The guys joke about what new phone I have for the week.

I'm on T-Mobile in Frisco, TX and I get 2.09Mb/s down 0.50 Mb/s Up on my HD2.

I've also seen an AMAZING 19Mb/s on the T-Mobile "WebRocket" usb stick for laptops here.

That's more than twice the speed of my home Cable modem.

As you can see I ran this test 20 times and got fluctuating numbers on my iPhone 4.

Sprint limits their upload speed to 1MB.

I was using the 4G network in Maui (that island is almost completely covered) and got really consistent results on speedtest.net getting ~3-4 MB down and ~.8-.9MB up.

In Houston, I am getting between 2-6MB down and .8-.9MBup on 4G. I just got .95MB down on 3G.

I used my EVO4 to tether to my laptop for two weeks in Maui and got similar speeds to what I get at a coffee shop. Pretty pleasing. Also, I used about 1.5-2GB of bandwidth each time I connected, so having unlimited data sure was nice. I also used it to tether without having to root or jailbrake the phone, another nice feature that you don't get with the iPhone.

And, I can hold it any damn way I please. ;)

^i know I want the stupid evo so bad but have to wait 2 months until my at&t contract is up.

Watching mobile tv at work is awesome, we watched most of the world cup on my friends evo if we couldn't reliably stream from websites

edit:

I know there is a way to unlock using wireless N capability on the evo but it does require rooting the phone.
