I saw this in the news a few minutes ago. I don't know if I'll stay awake for it or not. My new job would have me out patrolling about the time of this event. It would look really fantastic in the background of some cryogenic tanks at work, but they don't allow cameras.

Not too spectacular, but still kinda neat.

I like that shot Patrick!

I will say this -- I will have an intervolometer before I try this again.

Some cool things about my experiment that I learned:

Takes about 17 minutes for the moon to move completely across the frame of a 7d (1.6 crop factor) with a 300mm lens mounted on it. (the camera was in vertical orientation.) Put the camera on live view and go to the 10x magnification and you can literally see the movement of the moon.

It was very neat to watch the little toupee of a shadow appear on the top of the moon. Happened very quickly. In the future I will time it better to be set up to capture this transition from full moon to shadow.

I also learned that 300 is too tight for a good series of shots. I will use the 70-200 next time. I wish I would have captured at 5 minute intervals for an hour and a half, and gotten the progression from full, to shadow to full.

I will know better for the 21 December event.

Over lake Conroe this morning, D70s, ISO 1600, 1/30, 2.8. VR on and Active. Camera pushed to the limit.

I saw this about 5:30 this morning. It was pretty cool. No pics, but cool either way.
