Well looks like the USA doesn't have the "best" athletes in the world after all.
Just saying....

Can we start the NFL season early ??
I know they are not soccer players but it's a game a bit more interesting to watch, and no one defines 0 as "nill" in the real game of football.

OK easy there soccer fans just letting off a bit of steam
I missed the USA game due to unexpected events, but still it;s too bad the USA is out.

Well, you're right. The USA doesn't have the best soccer athletes in the world, but considering the fact that soccer is not being supported as in the rest of the world the team did a hell of a job and they deserve a lot of respect. The fought great and their country can be proud of them.
After all, the round of last 16 is a great success and to be honest, it is where they belong to right now.
Congratulations to the US team!

I agree with Andre. At least the USA made it this far. Good job and better luck in the next 4 years.

More interesting to watch? I find American football the most boring game out there. Run for 5 seconds, stand around for 2 minutes, run for 5 seconds, stand around for 2 minutes, and repeat. Soccer and basketball are the only big teams sports that incorporate continuous play. I find that much more interesting.
And every world cup team has a few of the best athletes in the world. We did just fine, it was a great game to watch. Ghana is an excellent team. No shame getting so close to them.

+1 indeed! They did play well and fought hard... they are not going back home in shame like Italy or England. Soccer is an extremely hard game to play and scoring is no small feat!

In fact in the actual 60 minutes of clock time and 3 hours of real time in an NFL game there are only 11 minutes of actual play:

Football Games Have 11 Minutes of Action - WSJ.com

I actually like American Football and (World) Football/Soccer both. Different games and different things to like about them.

Congrats to Team USA on their accomplishment of not only going to the round of 16 but winning the group and not losing a group game. Hopefully the US can get some strikers developed in the next four years - not a single goal this year was scored by a striker. I'm a little disappointed in Altidore but I'll give him a break because he's still pretty young.

Paco, did you mean Italy and France? England, while having a disappointing group showing still made it to the round of 16 and had the refs not blown the call could have been tied 2-2 at the end of the half. Who knows, maybe it would have changed the outcome although they certainly came out in the 2nd half flat and Germany outplayed them and deserved the win. Still, I wouldn't call it a shameful performance...although I bet the British tabloids will.

I played competitive soccer in my younger days and enjoyed it, but I think the sport has changed, it was hard watching the World Cup. I have never seen so many people fall down and get hurt.

The sport I enjoyed watching now is Lacrosse. It's like watching hockey without the ice. These guys and girls battle it out.

Regardless, it was good to see the US make it to this level.

John, you're right that France's performance was so bad that it's a matter or French national pride now, and even the French President is talking about it The British played bad today. It could be that with the goal that that the referree so unfairly denied they would have done better today. I guess it's the 4-1 that has the English public furious. That's a big loss for a supposedly world class team.
