Question iPhone 3G - Restore and Update - 06-27-2010, 05:44 PM

I've decided not to sell my iPhone 3G. Instead I want the kids to use it. We have six year old twins and a three year old daughter. Even though school is out my wife and I still have the twins do "homework" to keep their minds sharp. My father-in-law was showing me all these learning leaning apps. The kids really dig them and it makes learning fun. It's impressive to see them navigate around inside the iPhone.

Here's the deal. I want to restore the 3G to its original settings but I do not want to install iOS4. I'd rather load OS 3.1.3. It there any way to do this?

If you have ever upgraded from below 3.1.3, somewhere on your system there should be the 3.1.3 software package. Something like:

PC - Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
Mac - ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates

If you don't have 3.1.2 (7D11) or 3.1.3 (7E18) on your computer then use the website below to find it.

iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download

Do your research before you roll back to earlier firmware. Apple's software will ALWAYS update to the latest firmware. The trick is to shift-click (PC) or option-click (Mac) the 'Restore' or 'Update' button on iTunes. A file dialog will open and let you choose the firmware you want. Otherwise, hitting either button with out shift/option click will update your iPhone to the latest firmware which is iOS4

Good luck

The updates were not there, but thanks for the info. Now I know where to look next time. Looks like I'll have to download the ipsw.

Thanks Justin! That's just what I needed. I'm bookmarking that url.

My actual firmware was 3.1.2 and I never upgraded to the newer ones. I think I will stick with it.

I am sorry but why don't you give them some books? Those make learning fun, right?

Thanks for that helpful bit of advise buddy but we ready every night. I was asking for help on the iPhone, not a lecture. And what part of this statement did you assume books were not involved?

No problems restoring the iPhone after downloading 3.1.3 and installing.

I guess you might want to 'ready' [read] more every night then, start with a dictionary.

Not a lecture, just reality. Also I don't assume anything, I infer. The word 'homework' could mean anything, once again I don't assume.

Fat finger typo.

Like any other post, if you do not have some positive or constructive to add then stay out.
