I would say it depends on what you plan to do. The Safari ride is well worth it, but it moves rather fast and you might not get the shots you're looking for. There's a few other great places in there for shooting though. I would also think it'll depend on which lenses you're wanting to bring.

I like taking my dslr regardless when I go, then again I don't own a P&S any longer other than my wifes POS (she wanted something to put in pocket). I did get some great pics of some of the animals in the walk through areas, and some really nice shots of the gorillas which was a nice treat. There are some other great photo opportunitiies throughout the park other than the staged stuff also.

I was about to ask this same question since that is where I will be later this morning. I'm taking my D300 and hope to get some good shots as well

If you're going on the Safari ride it's best to get there when it opens. Many or most of the animals will be out. As the day gets hotter you will see less and less animals.

I plan on taking a 24-70 and my 70-200. I plan on spending at least 2 days there.

put the longer lens on when you get on the ride, and it'll be better for you.

I took my Dslr...just make sure you pack some large water-tite bags...just in case you get on a ride that gets you wet...also it tends to rain there... :)

The animals are out and moving early in the morning or when it rains. Bonus on the raining - the lines are shorter too. Ive gone through that ride mid day and didnt see anything. Now we head over there on rainy days.

And you can get some cool shots. Id bring it.

well Ive done both...depends on your point and shoot, if its an awesome one Id bring that...those dslrs get heavy after awhile I found I took more pics when I had my point and shoot with me, took to much work to get it out, take off this, what lens, blah blah...

I've taken some great picks with my 5DmkIi and a 70-200mm 2.8L and I'll post some links to a few samples, if I can find them:

Jason Janik: Life as a Dallas Photographer: November 2009

Jason Janik: Life as a Dallas Photographer: February 2010

Scroll down to the animal pics to see...

edit/update:

You can find a few more disney pics scattered throughout our family blog:

http://janikfamily.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

http://janikfamily.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

again, just scroll through until you see some pics. I know the animal kingdom shots are in between a bunch of family nonsense and snapshots, but you'll still get a taste of what's there to be shot.
