Wanna come along too? Just planned a last minute trip for Sunday-Monday. Thought we would go explore the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. If you want to come, we would love to have you. Just send me a PM.
The plans are to drive up Sunday, Spend the night in Lawton, OK and then come home Monday afternoon.

I live about an hour from there..it's a great place to go shoot. Make sure you go by the Holy City area.. There is a 1920s era chapel there, along with the stone sets they use for the Easter passion play. Lots of arches and stone walls for photos in that area. There are also prairie dog colonies and bison roaming free (just don't get too close to them!) Another place to check out on your way in is Medicine Park..an old, one lane bridge leads into to the town..Medicine Park, Oklahoma
It's a right turn off the main road, just below the Winery of the Wichitas.

ahh..well if you want to eat..try the Meers store..they have great burgers and you can usually catch some nice bikes there as well. You'll see a sign for Meers along the refuge's main drag..it's east about 14 miles.

You've got to go to Meers if you're that close. It's worth the drive for a great buffalo burger!
The refuge is a great place for wildlife photography and landscapes. Should be some mountain boomers if there's some sun. Be on the lookout for bobcats and rattlesnakes. Take the fun ride to the top of Mount Scott on that narrow road. I have nothing but good things to say about Whichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. This should be a fun time!

Made a trip there last November. Great area to shoot. +1 for Holy City and Meers Store. One note on Meers, it's a cash or check only place some bring some with you.
At Holy City there's also a small Prairie Dog town where you turn off the main road if that interests you. Couple other spots I liked are Crater Lake, Scott mountain, and the town of Medicine Creek. Enjoy!

It will be very hot. Plan for it, water, hats, etc.

Our favorite places are Charron's Garden, the two lakes at the south end, and if you like to hike, the hike to the top of Elk Mountain is our very favorite thing to do up there. It's an easy walk up, kids and dogs do it all the time. Do watch out for the buffalo, they can be almost anywhere. We ran into one at the top of Elk once.

My avatar is me looking for a spot to set the tripod in Charrons.

Great Place!

With all the rain predictions, I was wondering if this was still on?

OH MY GOSH!!! We went to Meer's on Sunday. You guy's talked about the burgers. I wanted buffalo burgers! They serve Texas Longhorn burgers. We tried one it was good, but not enough meat for me. But Terry and I shared it (7" across) it it was ok.

BUT you didn't tell me how fantastic the homemade ice cream and peach cobbler was. AND it was friggin huge! It took three of us to eat it. I just though of my Grandparents when I ate it. Just like grandma use to make. When I was little, I got to sit on top of the ice cream churn, to hold the ice and salt in the container as Grandpa would turn the handle. You know the old kind that had wooden paddles inside.
We went back on Monday for seconds! I had ribs that time and they were great!
