Choosing Classes - 07-02-2010, 09:49 PM

For several years, I had planned that if I were to lose my job, one option I might pursue is to pick up some trades classes at Collin College for a semester or two (however long my money could hold out) and retrain for a better career. Well, that time has come. I was fired back in March. Now, I'm looking for classes to take this Fall (starts end of August).

I think I can get enough money and loans together for me to survive until the end of this year, so I need to get the most bang for my buck that I can. I've registered the following classes:

Basic Computer-Aided Drafting
Fashion Photography
IT Essentials I: PC Hardware and Software
CCNA 1 Exploration-Network Fundamentals
Network+

That's 16 of the 18 allowed credit hour load for this semester. I think I can handle this because some of these are introductory classes that I have already taken. I would also like to take

Introduction to Geographic Information Systems

but I might have to drop one of the other classes to do it. I'm thinking of dropping the Fashion Photography class. Which do you think would do me more good in the short term economic future? Intro to GIS, or Fashion Photography?

I am open to suggestions for any other classes. Please keep in mind that I have a lot of experience as a computer tech, I have a degree as a laser tech (meaning, I've taken a lot of electronics classes) and the only steady job that I have is graveyard shift, Monday and Tuesday mornings.

Thank you.

If your goal is to retrain for a different career, you might want to focus on that new career. I don't see how Network+ and Fashion Photography are the same career (even though *I* like them both).

If you are going high tech, then you might want to consider going for one of the industry certifications. They aren't what they used to be, but they are still helpful. CCNA is a good one. MCP (in something) is not bad. I'm sure there are drafting ones out there. But then you have to remember to take time for the test in addition to the course work.

+1 - Fashion photography would be my choice to drop.
