Good luck. I've found that it can take a while to build a client base. I wouldn't stop looking for a full-time job while you do this. If this really takes off, you can always quit. But if it doesn't take off, then you will be a step ahead in the search for a new job!

Steve, if you can, read this book. Like anything else, photography is 'customer relations'.
If you are a good people person you'll do good in whatever business you get into.

Amazon.com: Fast Track Photographer, Revised and Expanded Edition: Leverage Your…

Good luck.

Good luck.
Without getting into too much debate, I want to point out that that was written by someone who has made the majority of his income not from photography, but rather from selling to photographers.

That's not to say that it doesn't have information that can be useful to many people.

But if you look at his portfolio, he has a number of pictures that are flat out out of focus.

Look at those pictures. I can name DOZENS of people just on TPF that are MUCH better.

Thomas, I do agree that his photography skills may be lacking. But he's selling photography and people are buying.

Guy is a great salesmen without a doubt.

But he isn't selling photography. He is selling a dream.

It is a great dream to think that we could all be really successful wedding photographers making 6-figures so you can quit your day job. But he didn't do that. He saw the explosion of digital photography and got out in front with his buddy and have made a lot of money selling the dream of being a photographer to tens if not hundreds of thousands of people.

Read this and check the comments at the bottom.
STUDIO UGLY: Dear Wedding Industry...

I drive about 25,000 miles a year. On many occasions, I've been paid to give friends rides to the airport or to drive their furniture from one apartment to another. I haven't been in an accident in 14 years and haven't been convicted of a moving violation in 10 years. Would you buy a book from me about how to become a racecar driver?

Back to Stephen.

Good luck buddy. If we can help in any way, let us know. I'd be happy to review, critique, strength your portfolio.

It's a good time to start, because you can only go up from here! July is always a slow month for me... you can hop on the momentum that comes back in August and September. The slow time this month will give you time to get everything set up and running.

Did you see what book was paired up with the "Fast track Photographer", "Absolute Beginners Guide....", not a good sign. Although the book may indeed put you on the right direction as far as legal aspects and a little planning.
