Taking my dad to a Navy reunion in late August. We are staying downtown and I will probably have the opportunity to get out and shoot. Any ideas or must see places in the downtown area?

Not sure when your dad served, but if I was betting, the images that you might capture during the reunion would beat the pants off of anything on location...
Sorry that I can't help with Cincinatti though.

The only thing I can help you out on in "Cincinnati" Ohio is where to eat. If you've never had Cincinnati style chili you must hit a Skyline Chili parlor. Total opposite of Texas chili. Theirs is seasoned with cinnamon among other things and they put spaghetti in it too. You can get shot for doin' that down here.
If you have time for a day trip, venture south into Kentucky and head down to the Lexington/Versailles area to some of the most breathtaking horse farm country in the world. Wonderful shooting in the morning fog or the humid evening haze.

There will be 85 year olds that still fit in their WWII uniforms . . . and when they start talking about where they served and what they did they transform into 19 yr. olds right in fromt of you.

Thanks, John's Supper Club in Nacogdoches served chili-spaghetti (1967) and it was pretty good stuff. I am playing with the idea of making some stops in KY on the way up to Cincy.

+1 for stopping by Skyline!
A great spot for a shot of the skyline would be from Devou Park. It's on the other side of the river in Covington, KY. The Newport Aquarium is really nice, too.
There's an AWESOME place called Montgomery Inn, which is famous for their ribs, and the original restaurant is up in Old Montgomery. It's a nice little area worth checking out.
Enjoy the 'Nati! And Kentucky!

| Old Frankfort Pike (State Hwy. 1681) between Frankfort and Lexington is an awfully nice drive. | | | |

Skip Montgomery Inn. Famous it is but it is not worth the effort to eat. I order a salad when friends make me go.
Cincinnati Chili is not chili, it is spaghetti with a twist. The recipe is from Greece, that is where the unusual spices come from. I am a 4-way gal, that is spaghetti, chili, cheese and onions.
Mount Adams, Findley for the farmers Market, I LOVE Spring Grove Cementary. It is one of the most beautiful anywhere. Ault Park, Eden Park, Krohn Conservatory in Eden Park, Mirror Lake in Eden Park, and if you want to hook up with other photographers just let me know. Ohio Valley Camera Club is a great group of very friendly photographer. (maybe less friendly now that I am not there :) in person)

If you can wangle a way of getting upstairs room at the Radisson Inn on the KY side of town on I-71, I-75 and shoot towards the city about dusk you can get some amazing shots. You are in very hilly country around there and the city lights well in the evening. Another location is from about mile marker 5 sb on I-71 into the downtown area, look for a side street to get off and you might get some other good shots, you will be facing west to shoot the city. Riverfront stadium area should have some good , you can get to it by staying to your right as you cross the bridge from KY. If you are flying in, the airport is on the KY side, west of downtown so you will be taking 275 east to 75-71 N. You will be able to see many of this things. Also the Cincinnati zoo is world famous, though I have not been there. Downtown Cincy is full of new and old architecture and pretty compact. Along I-75 around Paddock Ln, there is an old Art Deco auditorium, again I have only seen it from the interstate. Kings Island Amusement park is on the north side around MM 15 on I-71 and has a replica of the Eiffel tower that you can go up in.

Many many years ago my Dad insisted on taking me to Izzy Kadetz's Deli. They're still around. but I don't know how much they've changed from the original location. I remember not getting a bill, instead on the way out my Dad just told Izzy what we had and Izzy told him you how much he owed. Pickles and sauerkraut on all the tables too.

Number one stop for me if I ever get to Ohio is Wright-Patterson, not sure how far away from where you will be though.

If could only venture out on one photographic expedition in "Porkopolis," I'd go straight to Spring Grove Cemetery with both my infrared and visible color cameras.

Photo opp:
- The bridges of Cincinnati are very nice. Roebling Suspension Bridge is spectacular. It was completed in 1866 and was the longest suspension bridge at the time. It look very similar to the Brooklyn Bridge his son built in the 1880s. It is supposed to be closed to vehicle traffic for painting but is still open to pedestrian traffic.
- I like the area along the river by Serpentine Wall, from Sawyer Point, to the Reds stadium.
- I also like photographing in Mt. Adams. This area is just East of downtown and is on top of the hill that you can see the whole city from there.
- Spring Grove Cemetery is a must. Here is a yahoo map
Eating:
Skyline is the original. All others are pretenders.
I go for the bowl of chili, with a side order of cheese and onions. The chili cheese combination is unbeatable. I have 8 quarts of frozen Skyline Chili in my freezer now. But buying it fresh is fantastic and cheap. I don't do the 3,4,or 5-ways. Adding spaghetti just screws up the chili.

Oh, oh, I forgot Winton Woods! Lots of birds. Great Horned owls hang out there!!!
AND if you have a full day. skip Cincinnati and drive to Hocking Hills, More water falls than you can get to and all very close to each other. It is a long day trip but worth EVERY mile and minute it takes to get there. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
