Exclamation Buffalo Roughs up a Couple Tourists in Yellowstone - 07-23-2010, 02:22 PM

CBS had them on their morning show along with some of the video of the incident. Starts off showing the Buffalo (looks to be a bull) and it is standing maybe 100 ft or so away in a sandy area, then a stick shows up in the frame and hits the Buf in the back (they said that they didn't throw it and that it was already on the Buf-to me it looks like it came into frame and was thrown by somebody) well the Buf starts to jump up and down or stomp/jump and then goes after them-don't think that there are others around. Nails the lady before she can blink and messes up her knee and bruises the heck out of her and also tosses one of the men around and busts ribs and blows his shoulder out. The actual attack isn't on tape (or they just didn't show it) you just hear their version of the incident.

Folks a Buf can jump a five foot fence and even can give you 30 yards in a 100 yard dash and beat you and turn around at the end of the race and kick you butt so if you are around them don't assume anything!

These people are lucky that they were not killed and certainly don't throw something at one like it is an old milk cow to get it's attention. Heck you pretty much just need to make an odd noise to get their attention.

Bison are just about to start their rut and bulls will "practice" on trees and other objects. The "thrown" item looks like it is part of a practice dummy (tree). If you watch the video, it is on the bison as it is walking through the parking lot and comes flying off of its head after it is startled.

That lady is very lucky to be alive.

YouTube - Woman Gets Attacked By Buffalo In Yellowstone
has a Longer Version which shows a bit more of what really happened.

There going towards it and then coming through trees so close to it really turned it into wanting to defend it's territory, she is very luck to be alive right now.

They pretty much did everything WRONg!

I wouldn't be getting that close to a wild buffalo without carrying something in .416 Remington.

Scott you pull that .416 out in Yellowstone and you will find yourself in BIg TROUBLE! I guess you won't be photographing in Yellowstone for a long while.

These people were just stupid and they learned!

My point wasn't that I'd be carrying a .416, but that i would never intentionally approach a buffalo that closely unless i were hunting it.

I'll be renting a 400mm f/4 DO lens for THAT trip, rather than approach closely.

Closer look reveles she kicked it up, and it startled her
