Looking for freeware - 07-27-2010, 04:21 PM

Hey all, I'm looking for free software like Photoshop, Just got my D90 and I need to wait while I rebuild my toy bank. Is there something out the like Photoshop that's free it will be a few months till I build up my toy cash. I have looked and there are a lot out there but if someone could point out the better ones and one that would be easy for someone that's starting. I haven't been shoot RAW but want to start just didn't think I needed to till I had software to use. Need some guidance please

Well, its pretty limited, but you can use the software that comes with the camera, ViewNX, which will allow you to convert from RAW to JPEG and do the basic adjustments.

Then there's Picasa which has support for NEF and other RAW formats.

I know there are some here who swear by GIMP, so that may also be something to look at.

I use both Gimp and DigiKam on my Kubuntu Linux machine..

If you were using Linux you could include DigiKam alongside Gimp..but then if you really want DigiKam check out the below link..

The KDE on Windows Project - Welcome to The KDE on Windows Project

With this you could run DigiKam on Windows..

If that is your question, the answer is no.

You might try a trial version of Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop Elements or even Lightroom 3 has a 30 day trial.

Rawtherapee : if you're just looking to adjust and do raw related post processing (kind of like lightroom)
Gimp: which is more for editing and modifying the content of the photo similar to photoshop

Note: I use these two as my primary work flow

Gimp is equal in quality to PhotoShop.

If you need raw editing on a par to Lightroom try UFRaw - Home

It also installs the plugin into Gimp...

I'll add my GIMP vote too. :) But here's a couple of websites that list free alternatives to windows programs. Some will have versions that work on Windows (like the GIMP) and others may be Linux-only.

A word of warning... don't be tempted to download GimpShop. It has to be run in XP mode and still has issues in Windows. It does not run good in Leopard either.

This is a port of Gimp and development in on again/off again and is based on Gimp 2.2. The current Gimp version is 2.6.10 and is your best bet...

When you are ready to start purchasing, you might want to consider Lightroom as a first step.

I left out a nice link earlier, thought I'd add. It lists some other alternatives and tangentially-useful items, such as vector graphics and typography.
