Cool 1968/67 Movies shot in Dallas-MARS NEEDS WOMEN - 08-02-2010, 03:33 PM

Even though they talk about it being Houston the movie was shot over a short time in Dallas in the fall. 1967?
Mars Needs Women (1967) (TV)
Some interesting scenes in the movie include shooting at:
Collins Radio in Richardson (showing large microwave dish and other dishes aoutside the building )
Love Field: Parking Lot, Main Concourse, Braniff Check in/Ticket Counter, Moving Sidewalk
Fair Park: Cotton Bowl (SMU game vs?), Science Place-The Human Body exhibit and the Planetarium, area around the Lagoon.
SMU Campus area: Outside the Meadows Art Museum and Sorority Row
White Rock Lake: The Pump Station-which was empty at the time now houses offices for the water department.
Central Expressway showing the Dallas Night Skyline-Southland Life Building
Statler Hilton: Check in area, Bar, a guests room (2 rooms w/bath),hallways, and a conference room. This building has been empty for over 20 years now and there has been heavy debate on what should be done to it-City wants to condemn it even though it is structurally sound.
Athens Strip: Men's Entertainment Club on lower greenville ave, was open until the early 1970's and was known for being one of the major clubs of that type in the city even though it was probably less than 5,000 sq ft.

There also was one well known stripper used in the movie BUBBLES CASH. Bubbles Cash
If you grew up in Dallas in the 1960's you heard about her all the time because she would go to the Dallas Cowboys games all dolled up and it would even be mentioned that she was in the stands and sometimes the camera would pan over to her in a crowd shot. LCD 20 | Jack Ruby - Dallas' Original J.R. She just knew how to market herself, I don't know if she is alive still now or not but Candy Barr http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/04/arts/04barr.html?_r=1 which is mentioned in the link passed away but they were both some of the "early stars" in the Dallas Men's Entertainment Industry.

BTW the Movie is really campy especially when they start talking about space travel.

September 11, 2001 startled the heck out of a lot of people who were jolted into thinking worst case scenarios. A job that I had at the time required me to have access to and climb many water towers in the small towns around the panhandle of Texas. Prior to September 11, 2001, no one gave a second thought to allowing access to the water towers (mainly only concerns about liability.) Following 9-11 there was a very large push to be very protective of the water supply and all points up to delivery to the houses.

Even though that pump house may not be currently active, it probably still ties to the main supply lines, and as such is even more closely watched due to the fact that it is not an active station (ie. any activity there is automatically suspicious behaviour.)

I may be way off base, but my experience has been that due to legitimate vulnerabilities in the water system, those in charge are very guarded following 9-11.

Kent your wrong, it was used as a pump house when White Rock Lake was a city water supply(1920's-1950's) and stopped being used as such back in the late 1950's/early 1960's, in fact I think all of the pumping equipment was removed in the early 60's and the place was just an empty shell until the remodel by the water dept about 10 years ago that turned it into offices which has a guard at the entrance to the parking lot for some reason. Don't know if they are running some computer operations from there for the east side of town but the station has no "direct" water connection to the cities water supply.

If you go into the woods just north of the parking lot you also can see an old fish hatchery and the open pit tanks that has not been used for 50+ years, don't know much history about why it was there and when it operated.

Also there is a funny scene where two of the martians go to the hotel bar and order drinks and the bartender told them that he only sold beer and wine since mixed drinks were not allowed to be sold in the state which is not true at the time where the Hotel was located.

Yeah that is the old pump house, burned coal at the time-you cans see some old structure on the west side of the building where the rail cars with coal would come in.

I need to go over there on the weekend and get some shots of the building.
