uploading images & exif - 08-06-2010, 11:56 AM

I have no clue what exif stands for - just can't remember - but I do know it is where all your settings for the shot are kept. (Yes! finally remembered)
So when I upload a picture here, where or how do I upload the exif? This file is how I've been getting help (well, other than learn to focus).

Exchangeable image file format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I read the Exif from Lightroom or from bridge. Some forums strip the exif to save space. There are many EXIF readers like operanda (I think that is the spelling)

the exif is embedded into the JPG

Some programs strip the exif too. I used to use a noise ninja plugin that would strip the exif. Also some photographers strip their exif because they don't want people knowing what settings were used or for other reasons unknown. I use a Firefox Plugin called FxIF to read it.

So, as long as I save to jpeg, people should be able to see my data? I am new and need advice - nice advice! LOL.... I've read everything I can get my hands on, but I learn by shooting, seeing the shot, then finding out what to do to fix it next time!
Apologies if I'm not using the lingo correctly. I'm not photography bilingual yet.

That's the way to learn. What editing software do you use? Sometimes there's an option to keep exif data or not. Adobe programs usually keep exif in tact. No sure about stuff like picasa or iPhoto.
Be sure to post some stuff in the 'Sharing' Section and get some advice on how to improve. Keep some thick skin though.

If you use Photoshop and use Save for Web, it will strip out the EXIF data. If you just Save As and then pick jpeg, it will retain the EXIF.

If you want to read the EXIF from photos posted on the web, use a reader like Opanda or KUSO. I prefer KUSO because it gives more info. You just download the program, install it and then you right click the photo and one of the choices you get is to Read the EXIF using whatever program you downloaded.

Of course, this only works if the person that uploaded the photo didn't strip the EXIF out. TPF does not strip EXIF out.
