Why CAN'T the sky be green? - 08-14-2010, 09:14 PM

One of my favorite pics that I have taken of my SIL is processed with an artsy/retro feel to it...and guess what? The sky is green. Guess what else? I LOVE that photo!

I just had a friend hurt my feelings, I'm sure she didn't mean to but still. She is the type of photographer that is really caught up in the "rules". I'm not. Yes, I do go by the rules a lot, but if I like something. I do it.

Anyway. Just had to vent.

Oh and here is the photo so you guys can see that darn green sky.

having feelings in Photography... meh, it takes an iron heart many times.

fwiw, I find the power line? to the left more distracting, try a crop, even into the hair a little, make the photograph square. dodge the shoulder some, see if you like it more. :)

no one that ever really tries to hurt my feelings is very successful at it.

Take it as a good sign that you are passionate about your photos...

but you might want to not worry about trying to defend your decisions. If you like it, then you like it. If you can pinpoint what it is about it that you dig, then you are better capable of repeating that vibe in the future.

Thanks. Tried the things you suggested. I do like it a little more! Thanks!

One thing that's guaranteed... at some point someone will not like your favorite photo. Unless you're selling to a client and it's the client that doesn't like it the best bet is to listen to what they have to say, give it some thought, and if you think they are wrong, let them be wrong It's very painless

If you shot in NEF (I think that's Nikon speak for RAW) you can possibly minimize the chromatic aberration in ACR by using lens correction. It seems to work pretty well.

If its a photo you like or love, don't ever let anyone tell you its bad.

Photos are more than technical or even artistic.. they are the moments in life that make them great.

Stand behind someone picking up their photos at a 1 hour photo and listen or read comments on facebook profile pictures... you'll hear/see more than once. "That's a great photo of you!" Its because the picture is of them, a memory, a moment... not because its a great photo.

From a technical standpoint, iCe is right.. there will come a time in your growth, you won't like it anymore for those reasons. But it will still be a photo of a memory that will make you love it.

I tell people all the time.. if *you* like it, there is no one who can tell you otherwise. If the photo is what you intended it to look like when you pressed the shutter button, its a good photo. If someone buys it, its a great photo.

Photography is very subjective, so don't worry about it. You need to be your toughest critic, if you want to improve as a photographer. I am always looking for things I can improve in my own images...

One persons poop is another persons fertilizer. Like Jason said, be your own worst critic.
