These are pretty amazing when you realize they were taken 1909 - 1912. The photographer, Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii, actually took 3 black & white photos.. one each with a red filter, green filter then blue filter, and combined them and then projected them using lanterns to make color photos. Interestingly, only the peasants harvesting hay had any kind of smile. The rest look unhappy, or they are there for history, certainly not fun getting a photo. |
