Dallas/Fort Worth Window Installers - 08-21-2010, 02:08 PM

For all you Dallasites, I have called a few places over the past 6 months to get estimates to replace windows in my house. I have a wide variety of prices, some badmouthing the others, some saying those are good quality people, but I have a hard time knowing who to trust and who is a quality installer with decent prices.

I think I have decided that although it is cheaper to do them all at the same time, it will be easier to get the major windows taken care of first and do the others down the road.

Having said all that, who has experience with having windows installed and can recommend someone?

It is no surprise that there is bad-mouthing going on in the home repair/renovation industry. There are a lot of unprofessional people in that industry. They may have a great skill at doing the work, but many of them don't understand the business side of things. Kind of like the photo industry.

Jeff, I can't give you a specific window company. I built a new house last year and I learned one thing. Stay out of the big box stores. There isn't a dime's bit of difference between Lowes and Home Depot. Anything that required to be ordered and delivered was problematic.
Here's a link to one of my builders websites HouseTalk Today He has a radio show on saturday's and can help steer you in the right direction.

I install windows and insulation, but am booked up for the next three months.

I would recommend Window World, but don't buy the bottom of the line window.

Plan to be home when they install the windows and make sure you hover around and act like you know what you are doing.....

I just replaced all the windows and doors in my house all at once less than two months ago, and I had it done by :
Integral | Windows, Doors, & More! | Dallas, Texas area
Highly recommended.

If you're doing it for energy savings there are some debates on how effective it is as far as getting the cost back to you. Just an FYI

Thanks for the comments and suggestions so far.

David, I have the original windows. That combined with the lack of A/C in the living room creates a problem! The AC ducts are run through a furdown in the hallway. It stops in the hallway leading to the living room and then I have one in the kitchen. Both of those are what is used to heat and cool the living room so there is probably about an 8-10 degree difference during the summer between the living room (with a big double window) and the rest of the house. That room is my primary concern and the reason I am thinking of doing the windows individually.

Gotcha. And the lack of a vent is an issue, and may continue to be so. Did you see the thread on the "solar screens"? That might be a good way to try to see if cutting the exterior heat comming into the roon is going to help any or and I hate to suggest this, maybe adding another vent?

You might check on the way the dampers have been set on the system. This can affect the heating and/or cooling effect immensely from room to room.

Not being sure of the size of room and existing vent locations etc., etc., you could add the solar screens like suggested that would stop a lot of the radiant heat coming from the windows. Then depending on your taste you could add a ceiling fan to the room and set it to blow upward. That will give you some circulation in the room and help pull some of the cool air in from the hallway.

Also if the room your talking about is on a single story there are things you can do to possibly help keep the attic/crawl space above the ceiling cooler(ridge vents, radiant barier on the inside of your roofing).

Several years ago we put in Champion windows. We have had great success with them and they do keep out most of the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter. They are guaranteed for life. You have one broken by anything and they are replaced for free. I had one of my bathroom windows that was made about 1/8 inch too narrow. They ordered the correct size for me and let me keep the old one just in case one got broken. The windows along with several inches of insulation added to the attic have drastically reduced our electric bill. Also, several people that we have referred to Champion all are satisfied customers 100%.
