Would like assistant for early morning session - Pics added - 08-21-2010, 02:35 PM

I have a very early morning shoot (6:30am) in two different locations in Plano. I will be balancing strobes and morning light, so it's a good opportunity to see how to use multiple lights on location. The assistant would be helping with moving equipment and setting lights, spotting the model, etc. We will be creating three or four different images and should be done by 9:00am.

This is a TPF shoot and there is no money involved, but hopefully the assistant will learn a thing or two (unless they've done this many times before, that is)

Send me email to paco at pacoromerophoto dot com or call me at my number, posted on my website.

Wish I wasn't hundreds of miles away...

Anyone with an interest in portrait lighting should jump at this...

Good luck in finding someone up there. I'd think it wouldn't be too hard around the big D area.

You guys are too kind!

Dan, please don't drive 3+3 hours for a 2 hour shoot! I'd love to go to Austin for the weekend and do some work there - I am not very familiar with the place, but that's ok. Maybe in the fall.

Michael, thanks for your call - I was on the phone when you called me... another TPFer, Jeff (jeffro20) called me and volunteered to help. I will send you a PM next time, Mike!

I appreciate all the interest, and I will be posting the images tomorrow or Monday!

Thanks
Paco

Hi Paco,

No problem. Let me know next time you need an assistant! I'd love the opportunity to assist, watch and learn.

If I didn't have plans already, I would've loved to help out! I have assisted many TPF'ers here in D/FW, some active members, and one banned member!!
Maybe next time!

If you ever end up in Austin I'd love drive up there just to sit back and enjoy watching if you already had enough help. All though I know too manycan also be a distraction.

Good luck with the shoot regardless.

Well, Jeff was a great assistant and we got the job done! We started a bit later than expected and missed a shot that required a very dramatic sky, but we recovered from that and worked until 10am instead of 9am. Here is quick edit from one of the images. I think Jeff took a picture of the lighting setup so I will not include a diagram this time, only am explanation. This is pretty much straight out of the camera.

Lighting: 4 lights plus ambient.

Key was a 22 in. beauty dish with a 40 degree grid in front of the model and pointing down, about 12 ft from her. Fill was ambient light. There were 2 SB800's one on each side behind the model, with grid or snoot, acting as kicker lights and putting a highlight around her arms and shoulders. The fourth light was a SB-25 flash on a boom right above her providing a kiss of light on her hair. Jeff sprayed some water around Amara to create a fresh "real" feeling. C&C welcome!

I will post one or two other images a in a little while.

And here is two more. These show the limitations of my flash equipment. The flash duration is not short enough to this type of motion, so there is visible blurring. Not completely bad, as some motion blur is probably ok for an action picture, but it was most definitely not intentional. Lighting for these two pictures below was the same - a beauty dish in front and a grid on the back, with ambient doing fill. Also, on the second one I should have move the flash to full power and hook it via a sync cord to the camera, because that would have given me 2 full f-stops over ambient. What I did falls short of the effect I wanted even after pushing the raw file to the limit. Live and learn!

#2. I was praying her leg reach was such that she wouldn't crush my head with her sneaker on landing!

#3. Not happy with the exposure on this one.
