Years ago, in '92 I think. Wonderful time. Plan accomodations way ahead. I was living in Vicenza, about an hour train ride away and went on a last minute impulse with a couple friends. We couldn't get a train back that night or a hotel room anywhere. An Israeli hotel owner let us hang out in his lobby until the next morning; he even brought us a tray of meat & cheese and a bottle of champagne and chatted with us until morning. Memorable trip but I never could remember the name of the hotel. I always wanted to go back to thank the guy again. Anyway, ighly recommended, one of the best parties around.

Would you consider this to be a good photo op?

Venice, in general, is a great photo op all the way around. We didn't go to Carnivale, but spent 5 days there in 2008. Loved every second of it and I definitely want to return. It is a photographer's dream. I most enjoyed getting away from the crowds at St. Marks Sq. and the Rialto Bridge and just wandering the back alley ways. We loved our hotel - it was on the Grand Canal, but it felt tucked away from the crowded masses. We could sit in the beautiful walled garden at dusk and have cocktails and watch the flow of traffic on the canal. Hotel Venice - Ca'Nigra Lagoon Resort - Hotel Venice Highly recommend.

I spent a day walking around Venice back in 1997, but not during Carnival.
The photos I've seen of costumes during Carnival look magical.
I do plan to go back to Venice possibly next year. I'm just trying to see if it's worth going during the Carnival season. I also don't like crowds but if the event is worth it I'd suffer though it. Got to think about it some more....

I think it's better shooting in Venice when it's not Carnivale time. Very crowded. I liked shooting around when it's quieter. You can get nice photos during Carnivale too, depends on what you want to shoot.
