Need iTunes Advice - 08-30-2010, 08:09 PM

I would like to keep the same iTunes library on two computers and not sure if I can. Both would be under my own account.

I would like to keep library on my home computer and also a copy on my laptop. My only internet access is via an AT&T aircard from the house; however, I have high speed at work.

Is there a way to keep the same library on both the pc and laptop?

I done the Google search but end up more confused.

Any advice/help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have mine on my laptop and my computer at the studio. Should not be an issue...

How do you go about keeping the same on both? Do you have special software?

Do you have an iPod or iPhone with your music on it? If so, you should be able to authorize the second computer and make a backup there. When I switch from the PowerBook (laptop) to the iMac, I just copied my files over and then re-indexed the play list.

**added**
Not to get too personal but are you a PC or a Mac? File locations are a bit different.

Glen...I have an iPhone and an iPad (okay...and a iPod). Can't believe I have gone from no Apple products to three in less than six months.

Okay..I have installed iTunes onto my home computer and plugged up my iPhone. I went in and selected "Backup". Then, I would like to transfer/sync what I have on the iPhone to the computer.

I have not tried to sync to a windows computer yet. I have a Win7 netbook at home. Let me try it there to see if I can figure it out. To date, I only synced my apple products with either my powerbook or iMac. I have been wanting to try syncing with Windows so this is my excuse. :)

I will get back to you with my results unless someone beats me to it.

From the sounds of it you won't have any problems as each computer can be authorized. In some cases, this may come in handy. Heard about it last week, but haven't used it.

The latest version of iTunes lets you sync your library to all of your authorized computers (up to five) over a network. It's under "Advanced - Home Sharing". Once you have shared the library and updated, you've got the library available on that system.

Shamrock, I read that somewhere but could not find the information on it again.

Andyz, I think this is a similar article you referenced but this one is from apple.
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers

It basically states that you may change your sync mode to "Manually manage music and videos. It is a check box near the bottom of the Summary tab in iTunes. Using this method you may use your iPod, iPad, iPhone, as a disk to transfer music from machine to machine.

Since I was a all Mac users, I had to reformat my iPod to be used on Windows (meaning erase everything and then reload everything.) I was then able to use the method in the apple support page to make a copy of my music on my Win7 Netbook.

(edited some stuff that didn't apply)

My main iTunes library is on my iMac. I've synced all my laptops, which are PC-based, using the method i mentioned before. No reformatting required. My iTouch is mac formatted and gets updated from my iMac, my nano is Windows format and gets updated from a laptop.
