I have been wanting to take a class and need to get my butt in gear and do it...not sure what it is though!! I 'm thinking of something that would help teach me how to make good business cards, flyers, postcards, etc. What kind of class would this be...and suggestions as to where to take it. ???

Renae, it sounds like what you are wanting is a design class. However I dont know if traditional classroom setting would be cost effective for you to learn the kind of things you mention without going through a full course.
Take a look at Lynda.com. They have courses in Loads of software and photography and design and lots of other topics. It is subscription by month or longer period and you can work on as many classes as you can get in the subsc. period. Or if you needed to learn Fill flash you could search for that topic and view just the information you were looking for rather than a whole 10 hour course. Very efficient way of learning and a HUGE range of topics.
I think you can go and view what they have available without signing up, just to see if it would help you.

You're in Houston so check out this one at Leisure Learning Unlimited. I've taken several photography classes there and the teachers are really good! The classes are also realistically priced for both cost and time.

I agree with Beth - Leisure Learning is pretty cool....I've taken a few classes through them...and really enjoyed it.

keep in mind that as a student of an accredited learning institution, there are many student licenses along with discounts that apply, where as workshops don't always qualify for those discounts. It might be very financially viable to take a single class and be able to recoup the cost of the class through software discounts.

Free software is great but he cost of classes at an accredited facility is pretty great too! I checked in to one at Kingwood College and it was going to cost about $350!

yep -- and a full versioni of CS5 Design Premium cost 1899, vs the Education price of 499.

So here is the math -- if you plan on buying CS5 -- you can get it and a class for 849, or you can just buy the software for 1899.

EDIT:
I misread your post -- I thought you meant great as in very high... If you meant great as in awesome -- then I apologize for throwing those numbers out there

That's a good idea, but just remember, taking voice lessons won't necessarily make you a good singer. Dance lessons can certainly help one learn the steps, but won't necessarily make you a good dancer. A design class would certainly help you learn the important aspects of design as well as the technical side, but won't necessarily make you a good designer. With the creation of DTP, many bosses thought they could just purchase design software and train their admins to use it to create all their marketing materials. Guess what, didn't work. You can't really teach creativity.

Good luck to you.
