Reno / Lake Tahoe area photo ops? - 09-12-2010, 10:13 AM

Hello,

I'm headed off later in the week to Reno for my first time seeing the Reno Air Races! I'm a huge aviation/air show buff, so I'm really excited.

So, other than the - fast airplanes speeding around the pylons, what else is a "don't miss" photo op in the area?

I'm planning the spend 3 or so days in Reno, then 3 days in the surrounding area. Looks like plenty of great scenery near Tahoe. Can anyone share any great locations?

Thanks in advance...

Emerald Bay is one of my favorite spots on Lake Tahoe. Easy to get to. On the southwest side of the lake.

Yeah, that looks awesome! I'll be spending the last 3 nights on the south side of the lake, so I'll put this in the list for sure.

Anything else?

I spent a lot of my younger years in the Lake Tahos area. You will find more things to shoot than you could do in a lifetime.

In addtion to what others have listed, the Tahoe Queen boat ride on Lake Tahoe is always a great way to see some beautiful landscape. If you want something off the beaten path and secluded check out Echo Lake. If you want to drive a little ways and see an old town with an old west feel (not a tourist place, but a real town), check out West Point, CA.

Lots of gold rush era sites to see in the area as well. I beleive Reno has a few silver mines you can visit.

Make sure you post some photos when you return.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'm starting to wish I had a couple of more days there! My main reason for the trip is the air races - I was originally planning 3 days for that. But I may end up adjusting my schedule to spend more time at the other attractions.

The Tahoe Queen looks like a fun excursion, I'll probably try and do that. Although I did see a different lake tour that's on a yacht. Not sure which one I'll go for.

I do hope to see some of the old mining areas, if I have time.

I'm also hoping pick a few scenic spots, and do as many sunrise/sunsets as I can.

I checked out Bodie SP and Mono Lake on Google. They look cool, but I'm not sure what all I'm going to have time for.

Thanks again, and I'll be sure to post some shot here when I get back. (Hopefully some nice shots from the air races, but I know that's gonna be a challenge to shot.)
