iPhone / iTunes - I'm too stupid for it

This is a discussion on iPhone / iTunes - I'm too stupid for it within the Open Talk forums, part of the General Information category; O.K., this is my first iPhone and I've never used iTunes before either. I'm not sure if I understand that ...

iPhone / iTunes - I'm too stupid for it - 09-14-2010, 06:11 PM

O.K., this is my first iPhone and I've never used iTunes before either. I'm not sure if I understand that software because it is so user unfriendly.
Can anybody tell me how I can transfer image files from my local PC to the iPhone? Please?

When you connect the iPhone, iTunes loads and you click on your phone, on the left, under Devices. Then in the upper right click on Photos, and point it to your photo directory, or move your photos to where it is already pointing. .

The way that I do it is to create a directory called iPhone in the directory where I store my pictures. I then place photos that I want to transfer to my iPhone in this iPhone directory.

When you connect your iPhone to the computer and start iTunes look for the Devices entry. Mine shows up just below STORE about half way down the left navigation pane. Under devices is my iPhone. By selecting your iPhone -- one click on will do just fine -- you may configure certain actions. Among those actions is what photos to transfer to your phone. Look for the Photos tab across the top of the main iTunes window. Click on the check box where it says "Sync Photos from". From the drop down box, click on "choose folder" then navigate to the location where you stored your photos to download. Finally, click on the "Sync" button at the lower right of the main iTunes window to begin the download process.

Got it. Thank you very much.
Maybe one more question. When I use the App Store - is there a way to sort the apps I've been searching for for their user rating? I mean there are hundreds of apps listed - how do I know which one is good without clicking every single one?

I have another question and hope somebody can help.

When I got this iPhone I had to sign up for this data plan (either $15 or $25 a month depending on the transfer limit).
Does that mean I don't need this unlimited texting option on my existing wireless service plan anymore?
Wouldn't texting be covered by the data plan already?

with the iPhone texting and data are 2 seperate deals. You need the texting package that ranges from 200 to unlimited depending on how much you're paying. You can check your account settings at Cell Phones and Cell Phone Plans - Wireless from AT&T

Makes me even happier that I'm not with AT&T. I wasn't aware of this and went on just to check what their rates are. Looks like it would cost me way more to switch over to them. They also don't seem to make it very easy to find out what plans would cost what (at least from work).

A little off topic, and I have an iTouch (and love it) and hate iTunes myself, but got it due to all of the extra gear you can buy that is made to work with iPods etc.

Just curious because I can't seem to get to AT&T's site from work without it wanting to throw me into some sort of company deal. What are their rates for DATA and Texting? My wife loves her iTouch and has talked about going AT&T to get the iPhone.

Right now I have a family plan from Sprint and am attempting to convince her to switch to the EVO but not sure how well that will do.

they started it with the iPhone 3G. When the first iPhone came out the data package was $20 and that included unlimited data and 200 texts, you could of course add more texts to this at additional costs. When the 3G hit the market, they changed their data package to $30 + $5 for 200 texts, $15 for 1500, or $20 for unlimited. They've again changed up the data and if you're a previous user of unlimited you're grandfathered in, if you weren't then you're paying for the smaller chunks (which most tech writers are saying all companies are going to be moving to sooner rather than later).

The whole texting thing is a cash cow for these carriers anyway. I read somewhere that it costs just fractions of a penny to actually handle each t/m that's sent through the system.

when I first got a blackberry back about 6 years ago, I inquired to see if I could have the text service turned off, as I planned to just use email. The answer I got, even back then was that if I had the data service that they were not technically able to block text as it used the exact same protocols as the data, so the companies that charge you a data plan, and then charge you for a text plan are more than double dipping on each and every text. The hit the sender with a text, then they hit the reciever with a text, and then they count that on the usage of your data as well, so if you send an SMS message with a photo, it will count against your data plan as well

quite a racket they got going!
