Big Bend in March..... - 10-04-2010, 12:09 AM

I've done a cursory search and haven't really come up with what I'm looking for: My wife just told me that she's going to have a vacation window in late March: I've been pushing for a Big Bend trip for years, and this may be the opportunity... Any suggestions as far as lodging, food, etc. etc. etc.: the standard fare...... Help me out here: I've been trying to get out there for just shy of twenty years and this is the first time it seems like a real possibility. I'm pumped. Thanks for any help!

I'm sure the link above will tell you more than you need to know. From a conversation on Saturday with a recent visitor...
Two places to stay up high in the basin. The stone cabins or the motel. The cabins are nice & March will be a good time to stay there. One restaurant in the Basin attached to the motel. Ok if you're starving or don't feel like driving 45 minutes-1 hour down to Terlingua.
The South Rim hike is required. Possible in a long day with a very early start and late return. Best done as an overnight excursion so you can catch sunset and sunrise.
Enjoy! Wish I were going.

I like the Easter Egg in Terlingua. Book early if possible! Check out the Starlight for eats and entertainment. There's several very small family restaurants in the area and they all seem to be great. Big Bend area is still pretty sparse on the amenities and I hope it stays that way.

My suggestions...I have stayed in Big Bend for the Spring Break period and found that staying in the Big Bend Motor Inn (BBMI) is acceptable. I have stayed there on three separate trips and never really had any problems. I have also stayed at another place and the beds were hard as rocks and the rooms small, so BBMI was my choice. The rates were around $100 a night, plus, the gas station right next door has a very good restaurant and good service. There aren't a lot of bells and whistles, but it is West Texas. And, gas is more expensive there too! There is also a new convenience store on the right heading into the park that looks good for food purchases and ice and what not. If someone can add a better place, please do because I have only stayed in these two places. Of course, staying in the Basin is even better, more expensive, and probably fully booked, so plan ahead. The ghost town of Terlingua has some things to see and do. The Starlight restaurant has good hamburgers and mixed drinks. It is very cozy and sometimes has live music. Not to mention the characters that visit are very interesting so people watching is a plus. There are other places to eat, but I find that these places have been consistent over the years. Also, the BBMI is next to the road that leads down to a back entrance to the park and Indian Head. This area is great for sunrise and sunset shots as well as a great view of the Chisos Mountains. Feel free to PM me and I can give you more information. There are lots of Big Bend vets here so I am hoping they can give you more than I have. Have fun!

I'm a big fan of Lajitas Resort. You can hit Terlingua from there.

March is Spring Break month. Every motel room as far away as Alpine and Fort Davis will be filled. Some are reserved a year in advance. Don't wait to get a room. Trust me.

Via Rio Grande Village Campground - there is a spectacular view of the Rio Grande with Mountains as a backdrop. Best seen at sunrise. There is a small foot bridge that leads to an hill that overlooks Boquillas, Mexico.

If it is still there, Phat Cafe in Terlingua has an out of this world amazing asian fusion dining experience.
