I have a program shortcut icon on my desktop that has a little shield on it, which I'd like to be gone. Where is the setting for that? (I've looked for it but can't find it.)

Do you have UAC enabled?
If so, disable it.

another thought...the program might be requiring elevated admin rights to run. In that case I don't know if you can really remove that little annoyance.

Maybe try going into the properties of the shortcut and change the Icon to something else to see if that will trick it into going away.

Well, the program runs fine although the "badge" is still on the icon. I guess I'll have to get used to it. No biggie.

That badge means the program is running as administrator mode. This is needed for some programs due to the complexity and how much they interact with the system.

Thanks, Rich. I knew you'd have more info.

I probably should pick up a book or something on Windows 7 as I hate learning by trial and error and asking questions every time something comes up.
