What would happen if you purchased an item and the online store you purchased the item from did not insure it and the item was lost or damaged.
My opinion is that the item never reached you so the responsibility lies with the online store and the transportation company they used.
Don't you think? | | | |

I did not have that happen with a lens but with a laptop. The vendor (one of the online computer stores) returned the money to my credit card as soon as UPS notified them of the loss and they dealt with the loss directly with UPS - - and UPS was the shipper selected by the vendor. (It turned out, in the investigation, that someone in the UPS operation opened the box and removed the laptop...) I was free to do as I chose, since I had my money back right away.

Angelo, I sent the lens to Sigma for repair. Sigma did not receive the lens.

Dave, since you were the shipper you did right in insuring the package. Had you not insured it you would have received their minimum coverage for uninsured material, which is something like $50. You will now have to file an insurance claim with UPS.

It would be funny if I didnt need the lens. I planned on selling it but there was no way Id sell it for how much it was insured for.

Sorry, my misunderstanding... I thought that the vendor was the shipper and you were waiting for it...

Same here - never lost a package. (knock on wood...)
I do an overkill when it comes to packing and labeling.
Most packages are lost/damaged due to under packing and loose labeling.
But, accident like a forklift running over a package does happen :-(

I don't know how damaged it was but if it was stolen they will have to send it in to Sigma for repairs...
I wonder if Sigma checks those things out?
It's also possible that as it traveled throughout the UPS system the box opened up and the lens rolled somewhere in one of their warehouses. There's a good possibility the lens will be found (after giving them a good description of the contents), but in what condition?

The lens is pretty large (120-300). I even let UPS tape up the box after I packed it. I just dropped off the invoice and the cost to replace it so we'll see what happens. My first thought was that someone stole it but they wont get very sharp images if they try to use it.

Keep us updated. Hopefully UPS handles it better than USPS.
I bought an item from an online retailer and they shipped it through USPS. The tracking confirmation stated the package was delivered to my door, however nothing was there. On notifying USPS, they said the package was still in the sorting facility (ummm, ok, so why is the confirmation saying it's at my door)? After a couple of days I called back and they said it was now delivered.
They then proceeded to state that they spoke with the courier and he remembered dropping it on my porch. Are you serious? Of all of the houses they visit, he magically remembers leaving a tiny package on my porch? I don't think so.
I called the retail company, and they wouldn't do anything because the confirmation from USPS stated it was dropped off at my door. USPS wouldn't do anything because their confirmation stated it was dropped off at my door..........
I kid you not, no exaggeration whatsoever, the item randomly showed up at my door 3 months later. It had to have been under a seat in a truck or something. I was absolutely baffled.
The part that frustrated me the most was that I was in the middle taking the hit, even though none of it was my fault. The retail company did their job of shipping it, and USPS screwed it up and proceeded to lie directly to my face that they physically dropped it off. Not to mention their "systems" were so off base that it's scary. Telling me it's in the sorting facility when the confirmation states it is at my door.
I have since vowed to do all of my shipping with UPS/FedEx, no matter the cost.
I'm curious how this ends up.

First thing all packages/letters have $100 INSURANCE in their system design-but if an item is worth $20 that is what you would get not $100.
Most likely during shipment some other box/es stacked on it either snagged/crushed/popped yours open in transit and when it was unloaded and transported on what could have been a 1/2 mile long belt the contents became seperated from the packing-they can have eqyupment jams that can pop open any box made by man and they can also even bend 1/4 inch thick steel plate (I've seen it happen) or pop a computer box in a million bits with no human involved.
SO MOST LIKELY their "system" destroyed your contents which they judged as non repairable and they will send you funds to replace same up to a reasonable insurance value which it sounds like you claimed and paid for. NOW IF it was the case say the contents were a rare item that had "other value" more than that say you bought it then there is a possibility that they would let you insure it above what a standard similar object is worth -say it was a mount blanc pen owned and used by a famous person-ie president/author- then it has additional value.
AS to an empoyee "stealing" something that really doesn't happen very often and 99% of them get caught anyway-at least in the big hubs everybody-including managers exit through metal scanners every day. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
