Craigslist scam? - 10-18-2010, 05:50 PM

Got the following reply to a D70 a put up for sale on Craigslist. Looks like a scam to me. What say you?

"Thanks for your reply, i am very glad to know that the item is still
available for purchase. however i have few questions that i will like
to ask you....

I would like to know the reason why you are selling it, I'll also like
to know the actual condition, i mean how it works. and if you still
have the original box that it comes with and what is your firm price?.

If you don't mind getting paid through PayPal I'll like to purchase it
for my friend Son who resides abroad and study graphic design as a
compensation gift to his excellence performance in his studies. Though
I'll not be able to come for face 2 face transaction or for the
picking up cause am a Naval officer and presently on a ship. But am
ready to make the payment VIA PayPal..

I am ready to pay $90 for it shipping, because I'll not be able to do
the shipping my self due to the nature of my job(i mean always on the
ship).

So kindly send me your PayPal email ID for the payment to be made
instantly if you have an account with them already, and if you don't
have one you can simply do that by browsing through www.PayPal.com to
set it up, it very easy to set up so you can get back to me with the
email id you use for the account.

I hope you will consider my request favorably. Your quick response
will be appreciated

Thanks..
Best regards...

Please excuse any spelling or grammatical errors"

scam

living abroad, pay a ridiculously high amount for shipping, 'Son', "please excuse any grammatical errors"

The 'living abroad' and the last line is what screams at me. Plus, if this was preceeded with an email asking, 'is this available?' as the only question, it's a scam.

I knew it was a scam, just letting everyone know to be aware of Jeri Weaver. I told him I was in the Navy also and asked him what ship he was stationed on. We'll see what his response is.

That's a good one. You could also tell him you work for a "secret intelligence agency" and that you track ISP numbers for a living. That might make him squirm a bit.

I would avoid replying altogether. Many of these messages are designed to get a reply from you to verify your active email address that will then be sold with hundreds of others to advertising and spam groups.
My general rule is if a CL email asks about my "item" I just ignore it. I bought something from someone once who would only reply if you included the current weather in houston in your email lol, I like that

Or take a photo of an item with the current day's newspaper. If someone asks me that, I'm going to find one at a store that has tomorrow's date, such as Sunday's paper on Saturday afternoon.

if the email stopped after the 2nd paragraph i might not have assumed so but the rest screams scam. i've actually gotten tired of reading emails from CL like that and just moved on to the next buyer lol

If it's coming from a buyer and it's a wordy email, for instance, having a second paragraph, it's a scam. Even the PM's here, the chatter is very to the point, if there is some type of sob story or sending it for someone else, it's a no go.

Yeah, someone may ask what the condition is, or if you can hold it until they get a day off of work, but the average CL user doesn't go into a big long story about being the Barrister of a Country at war and wanting to pay you with in with a money order in USD or hidden gold.

I've never met too many naval officers, or any other branch of service, that has that kind of struggle with grammer or the english language.

grammar, not grammer. You wouldn't make a very good naval officer.

Delete the email...it is a scam! I posted a diamond ring and received 2 offers to buy (without seeing the ring) if I could ship immediately because BOTH of them were abroad at that time. Some day these people will reap the evil they sow!

Hey it's 12 year olds in Nigeria just trying to learn the ropes on how to scam "rich" americans. If they send out 10,000 hooks they may find a fish and since they are doing nothing else with their time let em waste it on scams like this.

BTW why did you put the camera up on craigs list for sale and not here?
