A shout-out to all the teachers in the forum - 10-20-2010, 12:13 AM

I found out today that the teacher who made a lifelong impression on me passed away in August at the age of 64.

Forty years ago, I was a student in her third grade classroom at Thomas Haley Elementary School in Irving, TX. She was so special to many of us students as she affirmed, encouraged, and loved us. Her classroom was a sanctuary during a very difficult period of my life. She was a special lady for sure.

Thank you, teachers, for a making a difference in young lives today. Some of them will remember you as long as you don't teach just for a job, but truly love and care about your students.

I knew you went to McArthur. I didn't know you went to Haley.

I was there for 5th and 6th grade.

Then on to Travis & Irving when they redrew the disticts.

Probably 1968 or so.

The bond with a wonderful teacher is lifelong. I went to my 6th grade teacher's funeral 2 years ago and had kept in touch with her my entire life (the fact her older sister and my aunt were close friends did help); she was one of my two favorite teachers - the other being my first grade teacher, who I remember with incredible fondness as a kind and caring person who loved teaching us to read.

In these days especially, it's nice to have great teachers. We live in a newer neighborhood and they just opened a new high school. I am *-----*( not sure what the word is) that so many parents have literally moved out of the neighborhood because they don't want their children going to a high school that has a variety...of cultures, races, economics, etc. The high school has become known as an awesome high school in the short two years it has been open. The kids have become known by substitute teachers as very respectful and very confident kids. In fact they are having issues getting kids to go home after school!!! One of the things they do, is make the kids shake hands with the teachers when entering the class. It's so refreshing!!
