Grizzly versus Bison: the rest of the story - 11-03-2010, 11:37 AM

An amateur photographer in Billings, Montana, dropped his wife off at work, then headed over to Yellowstone National Park to engage in his hobby for a few hours. While he was out on the road at 7 a.m., he heard what sounded to him like a horse and carriage running in his direction. What he found, instead, when he turned around, was a badly-burned bison being chased by a grizzly bear, both headed in his direction. He kept shooting photos of them as they raced past him. Check out the story and the series of photos as the animals raced towards him:

I don't think I would have remained standing there...

Ha mosephus I think i saw you at POTN in the "Pics of your lab" thread, no?

Also, what kind of "hot spots" causes such severe burns?

Just about any geyser would do it. Several of the pools are scalding hot, even without a geyser.

The bison like the numerous hot springs / vents in the colder weather as they are warmer... looks like the bison just got a little too close.

Incredible series!!

Cool story, but I wonder how much was actually true.
He dropped his wife off at work, then drove from Billings to the park, and then saw this at 7AM. What kind of shift does his wife work having to be at work that early?

They did in August too! We saw many sitting near hot spots. Also hot spots can occur almost anywhere, as there was one that popped up in the middle of one of the roads.

Wow! What photos!

First of all, Billings is about 110 miles east of Livingston, which is about 60-70 miles north of Yellowstone. Quite a drive to go take a few pictures. If he dropped the wife off at work, she'd probably be pretty mad by the time he got back to pick her up.

Having said that, I see the story came from KRTV in Great Falls--the station my sister and brother in law both work for. I'll get ahold of them and see what the deal was.

I just talked with my sister and she said she had seen the tape. It really did happen. The bear and the bison blew right by the photographer without even giving him a second look.

I guess the bear's thought was that it really sucks when dinner is cooked and it gets up and runs away!

Photo gallery: Just another day in Yellowstone

Maybe this link can provide more info.

"Then Wypyszinski jumped out and shot more photos with a small Sony point-and-shoot camera."

That is cool. Sometimes a point and shoot is all you need :)

One reason that they don't want people walking in a lot of the geyser fields, other than on the boardwalks, is that many times the ground isn't as stable as it looks and it can give way under weight, with a buffalo of that size being probably well over 800 lbs I could see that happening very easily-probably happens more than we realize.

Bet the Buffalo fell into the thermal started making noise from the pain got itself out of the water but in the meantime the sounds and smell attracted a grizly and then this happened. I bet the bear didn't even realize that there was a tender human that it passed up since it was focused on that meal ahead of it. Also since both these animals can do north of 40 mph the whole scene went by in a matter of seconds. (also looks like they were British since they were in the apposing lane-probably went that way to avoid the vehicle stopped in the road).
