I was just listening to Dewitt Jones (he and Galen Rowell would be idols of mine if I allowed myself that kind of behavior ok... so maybe I allow it a little)

Paraphrasing Dewitt-

Amateur question: How many good ones did you get per 36 exposure roll?
Professional question: Did you get the shot?

and

from Robert Frost, the last 8 lines of Two Tramps in Mud Time:

But yield who will to their separation,
My object in living is to unite
My avocation and my vocation
As my two eyes make one in sight.
Only where love and need are one,
And the work is play for mortal stakes,
Is the deed ever really done
For Heaven and the future's sakes.

I agree... sometime people try and get too focused on making every shot count, when (at least in my business) you just need enough killer shots to fill the space allotted on the page. You get a dozen beautiful shots and you just made a photo editor very happy! Who cares about the other 100 OK shots and the extra 50 not so good ones?!? They won't ever be seen!

Soooooooooooo,
How much do you like Galen Rowell?

Do you have any of his books?

I think TJ Avery and Jeff Kohn are fans also.

How much? I would call Galen my unmet " standard". Back in the days of film before auto focus (FbAf?) I used to read two sections of Outdoor Photographer as if they were the bible. The section written by Galen Rowell and the section written by Dewitt Jones. When I found out that Galen and his wife were killed in a light aircraft crash it felt personal. So much so that I stopped reading OP. It wasn't the same...

Dewitt Jones is a different kind of photographer. He's the motivational speaker type. One second I look at one of his images and go wow and a few images later I'm wondering why he didn't level the horizon

I have Galen Rowell- A Retrospective and Inner Game of Outdoor Photography. A the moment they are next to 6 or 7 of Ansel Adams books. I have a couple of Dewitt Jones books next to those.

I have an extensive book collection.

I was trying to get TJ and Jeff into a bidding war on an autographed copy....

I was just looking for it. Its a Freeman Patterson.

Can't find the Galen Rowell.....I think it was called "Mountain Light".

I was lucky enough to see both of them at separate seminars.

I saw Dewitt and George Lepp together.

The thing that was shocking to me was the incredible number of rolls Freeman would go through.

If memory serves it was 2000-2500 for a 1-2 week assignment.

And the say digital shooters scatter shoot !!!

I can relate. My book collection covers the range of photography to quantum theory to butchering to Ham to reloading to archeology and who knows what else

Mountain Light is the name of his company and I guess that's his signature book.

I have one of Dewitt's motivational DVD's. He said 40 plus 36 exposure rolls per assignment and maybe 30 of those prints would actually be used.

The thing is, there is no need to spray and pray with digital (except for maybe wildlife to make sure they aren't blinking). We get to see what we shot right after we shoot it.

What are your thoughts on bracketing digital?

If you shoot RAW, can you shoot the first, then go +4, -4, and get the rest in Lightroom ect. ?

Bracketing is something I think about, but never do....

I never remember to bracket. I shoot, look at the histogram, correct if needed, repeat.

Exactly.
But I was thinking for blending purposes.

I used to bracket a little with film.

Usually only one direction.

On the 4x5, I usually pick an exposure ad just go with it.

I read somewhere that you just need to grow some balls and expose correctly the first time...

Go to Bishop, California and see Rowell's prints. I was shocked to see how big the prints he was getting out of 35mm. The three mountain sheep lined up with sharp focus on all three eyes will knock you down.

Barbara's work was also worth seeing as it was mainly portaits.
