BE AWARE of Houston Community Newspapers HCN- RESOLVED - 11-21-2010, 09:42 AM

This issue has been taken care of by the Staff of HCN. Their response was faster than I ever would have imagined. It was an issue they had not yet dealt with going to a new host-server and website. They assured me that in no way did they intend to sell any of my pics and have disabled the option.

I have been sending my High School game shots to the Cypress Sun once and a while when they asked for a shot of a game to run with a story.
This morning I noticed that they now have an option to purchase the photos.
I have my name on the bottom corner of each photo and have my info in the metadata.
Can they sell my shots. I did not send them to be sold.

Speaking from a photo editor's standpoint, I would not sell a freelancers/contractors stuff for profit for the paper. That work belongs to them (can you say 'copyright'?).

I just got off the phone with the Sports editor. He explained that the new website they are using puts all photos for sale. He also explained he just learned that detail. I believe him and I believe that he will get this issue resolved.
The new site is only hours old.

Moderator-
can you please kill this thread? I made a mistake with the title. I wrote BEWARE and meant BE AWARE.
I just received a call from them and they are not happy about my title. I agree.

You can edit it yourself. First click edit, then click the advanced button in the edit screen. That will let you edit the thread title.

Completely depends on the contract that the shooter has arranged with the paper. A lot of places have a rights-grab standard contract.

What I am saying, Mr. Minton, is that my contract does NOT allow that...and yes, there are some contracts that DO grab all the rights, but that's not the way it should be, i. e., work-for-hire (WFH).
