Seems they're making it up as they go and they're gonna make examples out of anyone they want. I quit traveling in other countries because I didn't like the way I was/could be treated. I guess I'll be driving more and farther in the future.

I wonder just how far they're willing to go.

I understand what you are saying Mark, and it may seem like freedom of the press. What I have learned from years in the news photography business is that you may not photograph or videotape on private property without permission. The airport is not a public place, so restrictions can be put in place by the organization owning the property. As an example-I live in NJ and can walk across the George Washington Bridge, but may not photograph it because it private property (NJ/NY Transit) and signs are posted not to photograph. On a separate occasion I was photographing my son in a food store once and the manager approached and asked what I was doing. Private property=their rules.

I think you meant to say that you can't photograph while ON the privately-owned bridge. You accidentally said that you can't photograph it, as in the bridge itself. You CAN photograph the bridge from a public access point, like the sidewalk leading up to it. This has been clearly defined by the courts.

@Jrod - the difference is that in those other circumstances, if you are doing something the property owner doesn't like, you are asked to leave. Then if you won't, you are removed for trespassing. You cannot be arrested for taking the photographs, you can be arrested for trespassing. But you have to be warned first and given the opportunity to abide by the lawful request.

And usually the rules in most airports are more governed by the public rules as they ARE publicly owned. That means photography is generally allowed. Even the TSA has no rules against photography.

Yes.....I did not intend that it can't be photographed from a public place. Thanks for catching that. ALthough it is legal to shoot from public property, you could still be harassed by police. I was in a park almost a mile from the GW bridge at the boat basin with a video camera and another person-we were shooting for about a minute, and a state trooper pulled up fast and asked us to explain what we were doing. Since we had press credentials all was fine, but he said that they investigate anything that could be considered suspicious. I know we were legal even without credentials, so it can be frustrating.

Some of these rules can be so confusing because I'm not familiar with the NJ/NY Transit, but here in San Antonio although the transit authority (VIA) is considered private they are funded with tax payer dollars. This would make me think they are public and not private any longer once they have taxing authority.

Just curious if anybody has any answers.

We are not allowed to shoot in the airports without prior permission either.
