National Geographic's Photography Contest 2010

National Geographic is once again holding their annual Photo Contest, with the deadline for submissions coming up on November 30th. For the past eight weeks, they have been gathering and presenting galleries of submissions, encouraging readers to rate them as well. National Geographic was again kind enough to let me choose some of their entries from 2010 for display here on The Big Picture. Collected below are 47 images from the three categories of People, Places and Nature. Captions were written by the individual photographers. (47 photos total)

I was trying to figure out how to put my thoughts into words, until I read that comment number 652 did it perfectly:

Amazing pictures, really amazing.
BUT...some of the captions are just CHEESE.

I sent the link to my wife... I chuckled why she wowed and ooohed and 'thats an amazing picture' over those shots.

She then asked when I was going to enter one of my shots!

so, I thought about it, let her go over the ones I shot monday, and paid my $15 to send in my little turtle shot... Who knows. maybe I won't suck on the peer review :D

Why would I even think about submitting a photo to this contest?

I consider myself a reasonably competent photographer - - but these shots are so far outta my league!

And somebody has the job of selecting the best? Not an enviable job.

Yeah - I grew up on those photos. Like any other young boy, it was the pictures of bare-breasted native women I looked at, but slowly I truly began to look at the photos and think about the kinds of photos I could take.

Not long ago, I came into possession of a National Geographic from 1962 with a story and photos about Viet Nam by Dickey Chapelle. Chapelle was later killed while photographing the war but her images of the country, shot such a long time ago, still impress me with their ability to tell a story.

These are greats photos, but Nat Geo has always been associated with great photography.
