...I'm OK with Netflix raising their prices. I know this will not go over well with many Netflix members. Over the past 5 years they have continually bettered their service without raising their prices.

Anyone else agree or disagree?

Jeff and I were talking about this last night. I think it's going up a whole 1$. IF you want the DVD's sent to you. If you only do streaming (that would be us) it is going down 1$ Either way, for what you get, it is still a fantastic price.

My wife was just complaining last night that the price for her account will be going from $14.95 to $19.95 a month. I think she will be canceling.

That's the plan that we have but I haven't heard anything about the raise in price yet. How did you get the information and when is the rate supposed to increase?

Via email. Below is a copy & paste.

Quote:

We want to let you know about two important changes to the Netflix service.

1. The price of your current plan is changing from $16.99 a month to $19.99 a month. This new price will be effective with your next billing statement on or after January 2, 2011, and will be referenced in your Membership Details. With your current plan you can both instantly watch unlimited TV episodes and movies on your computer or TV and receive unlimited DVDs by mail.

2. We now also offer a new $7.99 a month plan which lets you instantly watch unlimited TV episodes and movies on your computer or TV. This plan does not include any DVDs. All the titles you can watch instantly on your current plan are also available on this new plan, and as a reminder, not all titles on DVD are available to watch instantly. This new plan is available immediately – if you'd like to switch to this new plan at any time, simply visit Your Account.

Why the changes? Our selection of TV episodes and movies available to stream has grown dramatically, and as a result most members want us to deliver unlimited movies and TV episodes two ways: streaming instantly over the internet plus DVDs by mail. The price change will allow us to continue to offer the popular plan choice of unlimited TV episodes and movies streaming instantly along with unlimited DVDs. The new plan, which does not include DVDs, is a great option for the increasing number of members who only want to watch instantly. The $7.99 a month price reflects no DVD shipping costs on this plan.

We hope you're enjoying great TV shows and movies from Netflix, and that you'll continue to enjoy Netflix on whichever plan you choose. We realize you have lots of home entertainment options, and we thank you for your business. As always, if you have any questions, please call us at 1-800-715-2146.

–The Netflix Team

Actually they raised the price for Blu-Ray memberships a year or so ago, so this is the second price hike in recent memory. I think it sucks, but the other mail-order rental services I've tried were inferior in both delivery time and selection/availability, so it's not like there are viable alternatives.

I couldn't care less about the streaming crap, I think they should have an option to remove streaming access and save a couple of bucks off you membership.

How funny, I feel just the opposite. I could care less about the Blu-Ray which is an extra $4 bucks a month. Good thing it's an option.

I'm a little disappointed, I think we were paying 18.99 when we first signed up and that seemed decent... at 23 or 24 it is getting to high. However, it has been one of the best services we have ever used.....

I agree, how about a BD only membership with a price break for those of us who would never stream or get DVDs?????

That is the one we have too. We LOVE it. We even stream stuff that we have DVD's for, it is just easier to stream it.

I love the streaming option and have it set up on both of my televisions I'd ever watch. I'm just not pleased with the lack of selection of movies available to stream.

Give it another 6 months. It's come a long ways in just the past 12 months.
