Hi everyone!

My name is Kerri, and I'm new here.

I've been enjoying photography for the last 10 years or so, ever since I got a Canon Rebel G and figured out how to do the basics. I've always wanted to better my skills and really learn what I'm doing, but I didn't have the room in my schedule in college. So why not start now?

I've been begging my father to pass his old, manual camera to me for as long as I can remember. I want to say it's a Pentax, but to be honest, I've been allowed to hold it so few times in my life that I can't be sure. :) I've finally persuaded him to let me have it for Christmas this year, and I'm anxious to start learning all I can about it!

I've always wanted to learn to work in a darkroom. I'm very passionate about that. But I haven't had the opportunity.

I was wondering if someone could recommend somewhere in the Dallas area I could take photography classes. I've been looking into CCCC, Richland College and SMU informal learning. While I wouldn't mind getting into a degree program, it's not really what I'm looking for. I don't think I'll ever be a professional photographer -- I really just want to learn for my own enjoyment.

I live in Frisco, so something close to that area would be best, but I don't mind putting in the driving time. I'd love to get started in the spring.

I know some photography basics, but I really wouldn't mind totally starting at square one and REALLY getting to know what I'm doing. Let me know what you think!

Thanks everyone!
Kerri

Hi Kerri,

Welcome to the forum. I don't know of any classes off hand but I'm sure many of our members will load you up with a bunch of options.

Ruben Mediola teaches at the Collin County College. You might look at their schedule for next term. He also announces his classes on the North Texas Photography Club meetup.com page if you look for it there, too.

From what I have witnessed during the NTPC meetings, Ruben has a very easy teaching style. He like to use a combination of lecture and hands on.

That sounds great! That's pretty much spot-on to what I'm looking for. I really miss lectures from college, but I'm also anxious to get hands-on experience.

I'm not sure about any of the local camera stores up in that area, but I know they are always offering different classes at the Camera Exchange down here.
