What's going on at FedEx? - 12-02-2010, 01:55 PM

Anyone else had a package this slow to arrive? Note, the origin is only 125miles away. Why this package was routed around east Texas and almost to Kansas before making it to my residence, I guess I'll never know. No problems with address or anything. Did UPS take over FedEx, and I not realize?

Probably just a scan or entry mistake. Happens, especially this time of the year with shipping volume up. We ship anywhere from 50 to as many as 250 packages and envelops a day. FedEx does a great job and we have had little problem with them. This type of thing DOES happen though.

Rule of thumb...if it HAS to be there and is critical, we ship FedEx Express Overnight and have never had a shipment fail.

I would have thought it might be a hub thing but that doesnt' explain all of the locations it went to getting there.

I've had stuff coming from New Orleans, Austin, and even Oklahoma (I know, I avoid the state but sometimes stuff happens) and have had to go to KS. I don't quite get it...

There may be various reasons but I hope the package got some frequent flier miles out of the deal. With FeEx, a package MUST be routed through one of its major hubs. I would have thought that DFW would be that destination.

What gets me is that it was driven and taken off the truck at the various locations on its way to Oklahoma. This it was obviously placed on a plane or a truck to Dallas where it was likely put on a plane to Midland.

What FedEx service was used for the shipment? It looks like it was FedEx truck (or surface...not sure what they call it anymore...).

They run a fairly strict Hub & Spoke system where almost all packages have to go through a hub of some kind. But I say "almost" because on the surface shipments, they also have a practice called "Bypass & Bleed-off" (BABO) where a station on the route to a hub can originate a load directly to another station or to the hub itself, by-passing the stations en-route if it has enough freight to fill a trailer.

Their ground service was, at one time, graded and priced by how many days the shipper would allow... so the choice between 2 points in the surface network could be 3 days, 5 days or 7 days and the price for each would be different - - but I am not sure if they do that anymore. But if they do, the evidence here looks like the shipper used the 7-day service.

I should add that my work with them was about 15 years ago, so a lot of this practice might have changed...

Looks like it was put on the wrong truck when it left abilene-should have gone either to Midland (if they had a truck going that way) or to DFW (ft Worth) but it was sent down to Roundrock and then from there it just was pushed around all over the place. Since this was over a week ago the volume still hadn't snowballed too bad. So you just have one of the odd shipments that years ago you would not have known about it's detour but since tracking is upscaled more now you know all the twists and turns.

I assume it arrived in good shape?

BTW the post office dropped off 2 boxes for the people a block over from me (same address # just different street) today-so i just dropped them off a few minutes ago instead of trying to get the POST Office to redeliver correctly.

Yeah, what's with Houston packages going through Webster when there is a hub in Southwest Houston? Overall, I have had few complaints with FedEx.

It got left in a trailer / bag (depending on the size of package)... Happens from time to time with UPS and Fedex... It happens, Fedex delivers ~8 million packages a day, UPS ~15 million... a few bumps a long the way will happen.

It was found in Enid and put back out for delivery.
