question regarding posting of pics - 12-02-2010, 06:59 PM

so heres the deal. Im on another photography subforum and I posted a question. I asked if these types and styles of photos would work for this genre.. regardless of what the question was I embedded a few images that were not mine instead of linking them for use as a reference just to show people examples of what I was interested in or what I wanted to do.

so instead of giving me their opinion they literally BERATE me for having the gonads to post the images instead of linking them, calling me names like thief, saying I stole images, etc..

I never once said any of the image are mine and I merely used them as a reference.

So, is this wrong? am I doing something wrong? because according to them I am wrong and unprofessional and I'm infringing on copyrights, etc..

Your thoughts?

Yea, linking is the preferred way.

If you do that here, Scott will get you.....

On Edit:

Being called a thief ect. is a little overboard.

they werent all from the same photographer.. they were actually from model mayhem but the styles of the photos were similar and again was using it as a reference point. why not have all the images embedded instead of having to click the links.. ya know

Portrait, Fashion and Wedding folks are very protective of their work.

If you lift it, they will react that way.

You intent was to save people from having to go look.

I understand that, they probably do also.

But they will scream if you copy it.

I definitely agree KJ. Def not copying anything, only wanted to use the photos STYLE as a reference point

Copy was a poor choice of words.

I meant as in lifting it.

We all copy styles ect.

I'd be irriatated if I found out someone posted my images on a forum or anywhere else. That's what links are for. I don't think it's stealing though.

I'd be happy if someone was looking at my work as a reference point. Now if they were posting a picture of mine to talk about how horrible it is, I would be upset.

My opinion is that you could post them with a very clear photo credit and a link back to their website. Since you are posting them for an educational debate, I believe that you should be allowed to follow the same guidelines that many educational institutions use. The one catch against this is that you are posting it on a public forum and not using the work for a class assignment that the general public won't ever see...

You could always go one step further and get permission from the copyright holder to post the pic in your thread. Then there will be no question of right or wrong.

well the photos were from model mayhem.com and I just grabbed the image tag code that they provide and embedded them.

This is something I've noticed on pretty much any photography related forum/site (even here)... photographers for the most part tend to be pretty anal about copyright and work, rightfully so, but sometimes over the top when the intent wasn't to steal nor harm and simply as a reference.

As a courtesy though, it's always good to make a note who the photographer was though.

As long as you aren't downloading to your machine and uploading them to TPF, you won't catch grief from me. Linking with some additional text attribution should be considered flattery. I know I'm flattered when that happens (albeit rarely ).

I'm with you. Some photographers are a little tightly wound.

Yes, you should probably credit the photographer, but really, what are the damages??

try comparing two photos that you find a similarity in.....with links. The effect is lost.

That whole "picture is worth a thousand words" ... then we restrict how we talk about photos on a photo forum.

Isn't the best way to just show the photos??

showing the photos instead of links has little to do with a photo credit, either way. And a photo credit is one of the most important things, right after getting paid and conveying your message/feeling/emotion/intent through the photo...
