Framing yourself?

Get the frame, cut the mat to size (or buy a pre-cut mat), and then depending on the thickness of the frame you can either tape the photo to the backside of the mat along the top with archival tape, or if the frame is thick enough, mount the photo to foam core along the top with archival tape or mounting tissue and attach the mat board to the mount board with tape along the top acting as a hinge. Lots of tutorials on the web for all that, with pictures.

Take it to a framing shop so you can lay it out with different frames & matting to see which would go together with your photo. Also get their opinions since they do it a lot. I like Aaron Brothers but there are a lot of them out there.

If you want to keep your costs down, both Michael's and Target have some decent frames for the money. Your toughest part will be finding a mat, unless your print is a traditional size (like 11x14, 8x10, etc). Some places, like Michael's and Hobby Lobby sell pre-cut mats to use in standard-size frames with standard-size prints.

If money is no object, just take it to a framing store and ask them to walk you through it.

When I give a photo it is usually 11x14, matted and in a 16x20 black frame. I like to use a cream colored mat most of the time but for black&white photos I like to use a plain white mat.

Hobby Lobby, and Micheal's both have pre-cut mats and a variety of frame sizes and colors available.
