Question Adorama and Refurbs... - 12-05-2010, 10:03 AM

PHEWW!!! Those sales guys at Adorama REALLY like their job! He tried to sell me everything in the display cabinet, and all I wanted was the refurb Nikon P&S. Although since he wanted to sell it before I hung up the phone, he ended up throwing in free shipping...

Speaking of... how much trouble did I get myself into? I decided to get my partner a P&S for a stocking stuffer. I settled on a Nikon S570 that I found on Amazon.com for $79. Its a refurb unit from Nikon USA and has the Nikon 90 day warranty.

A. - Is Adorama fairly reputable with their returns/exchanges of refurb units?

and

B. - Are refurb units a risky choice?

I dont know that he'll actually use it, so I didn't want to get anything terribly expensive, and since it comes with a Nikon 90 day warranty at the right price, I went for it.

I used to buy Dell refurb laptops and never had a problem with them. In a sense they've been looked at twice for QC. Refurbs are often classified as such only because they were returned, not necessarily because they were returned because of a problem.

Adorama is very reputable. They will take care of you. If you have a problem, contact Jeff Snyder at Adorama, and he will make sure you are taken care of.

Been using Nikon refurb stuff since day one, no better way to save money. And as for Adorama, never had a problem with them and have always gotten exactly what I ordered.

I have found Adorama to be an excellent vendor. Whenever a I have had problem, they have done a very good job at resolving the situation to my satisfaction.

Three refurb DSLRs from Adorama. Never a problem.

I don't think you can go wrong with Adorama or B&H. I bought a refurb Garmin GPS from Adorama and I've been very pleased.

Yeah, I use adorama a bunch, and they are pretty solid. Refurb stuff?!? I've had two NEC refurb monitors for about six years and they run perfectly! I'm sure Nikon refurbs will be just as good. The one refurb I'd be wary of - Xbox refurbs, since SOOOO many people experience issues with them, I'd want a much longer warrantee than your average refurb unit carries.

If he made you feel at all uncomfortable or pressurized, please let me know

As you know you have a 90-day return-to-Nikon warranty; you also have a 30-day returns period, for refund or exchange.
Shouldn't be any problems at all, but if you need after-sales support, don't hesitate to drop me an email.

All refurbished units sold by Adorama Camera are factory refurbished by the manufacturer. They can have simply been pulled from the production line if something appears faulty, or if it hasn't passed the final inspection. Most of the time it is a very minor issue that needs correcting, nevertheless, once it is pulled from the normal flow of production, it gets flagged as a refurbished model, so you may get a unit straight from the factory that has never been used.

A refurb may also be an ex-store demo, possibly used in field tests or sales displays, or it may have been ordered in error and returned to the retailer (who can't then sell it as 'new' so it has to be sent back to the manufacturer for refurbishment).

All refurbished items will have been checked over by the manufacturer by hand, inspected very thoroughly, diagnosed, and calibrated by experienced technicians, and could therefore turn out to be more dependable than a new item - which will only have been checked by a process of systematic quality control protocol (ie by random sampling as it comes off the conveyor belt).

In addition, Refurbs come into us with the firmware updates and latest fixes which were carried out at whatever stage it was at when we took delivery.

I hope this helps, but do come back to me if you need anything else.

Oh no Helen! He didn't make me uncomfortable, he just tried to up sale with a case, or memory cards etc. But he didn't over pressure me or anything, when I told him that I only wanted the camera he listened and offered free shipping! He's quite good at his job, but I can't remember his name. Trust me though... if I would have felt pressurized or uncomfortable I'd have hung up, I really dont have any hesitation about doing so. LOL! Its all good.

And thanks for the information on the refurbs. I definitely appreciate it, and you've made me feel all the more comfortable about purchasing one. I may go back to the website and get one for myself now! LOL

I think you meant pressured, unless you were talking to the salesman while flying across the country in a Boeing 737.
