The internet? What a crock... - 12-17-2010, 03:34 AM

I was just halfway watching/listening to an old DVR'ed SNL episode while I worked on photos/photoshop. Near the end, a commercial caught my attention. It was a spelling bee and all the kids were getting all these hard words correct. Then a voiceover says something like, "Thanks to AT&T high speed internet... blah, blah, blah."

They were trying to say the internet made kids better spellers (and smarter in general)?!? It seems like people spell worse these days!!! What a crock. The only thing kids do on the internet is post mean/terrible comments on youtube videos, download music illegally and post drunk pictures of themselves on facebook and/or myspace.

This is obviously not a literal assessment of kids and the internet, but my joke is based on a little fact. Kids aren't learning to spell better because of the net. AT&T is lying to you!

No in general Kids are not spelling better (except those that are good and join in spelling bees). But AT&T is helping class rooms in different areas/counties connect with each other and learn/ challenge each other to spelling bees and they never have to leave the class room.

That's exactly how I view it. It's like someone said, "Let's put a public library in the same building as a brothel and a crack den and call it the internet!"

Is it really the 'internets' fault though? Just like text messaging isn't making people bad spellers - I still use whole words, capital letters, and proper punctuation when I text. If anything, shouldn't your issue be with society and the people putting the information on the internet, and being lazy by using abbreviations in text? Taking issue with the internet, or text messaging is like being mad at the car that the drunk is driving.

LOL...

Internet is just a mirror for the society that uses it. 'The Internet' doesn't _DO_ anything on it's own, anymore than a camera can create great pictures without a photographer who knows what they are doing using it.

I personally would not have had access to so much knowledge and been able to create the personal education I have amassed without it.
