Now I'm Security+ Certified - 12-30-2010, 03:08 PM

I just passed my CompTIA Security+ exam! I am now CompTIA A+, Network+ and Security+ certified!

I pursued the Security+ certification on the advice of my college department head, though I haven't seen all that many jobs requesting it. I don't see how it is likely to help me get a job, but who knows?

Congrats on passing the test.

Now get a "JOB" and then a lot of those acronyms become secondary. I have zero certifications, yet I'm betting I can configure a Cisco layer 2/3 switch via command line faster than most that do... Just sayin'...

Well it is getting tougher and tougher to get a job without the certifications...there are a lot of good IT folks out there that know their stuff, just do not have their certs, but it is time to get them.

I was and IT Director for 3 yrs and let my certs lapse or did not keep up with the new ones, now catching up!

Get them while you can!

I'm not fooling myself on what the certifications mean. I've learned a lot in the classes that I took over the last 5 months, but I know these are only introductory materials. One of the people I have worked with a few times at my part-time job is a man who has been in the industry for 30+ years, used to work at MCI 15 years ago developing convergence technology and has almost every Cisco certification available, besides CompTIA and Microsoft certifications. He also holds a Master's Degree and is a dissertation short of a Ph.D. He told me that he hasn't had a full-time job with benefits since 2008. He's been working part-time, just to survive until retirement.

I have 4 or 5 more classes (depending on what I can get the department head to acknowledge) before I can earn my AS in CS. I'm hoping to take a few more certification classes along the way. I'm signed up for a Cisco class next semester, and I have several Microsoft classes that I could schedule later. The trouble with that plan is that I don't have enough money to complete it. I might be able to finish another semester, but I think I'm going have to drop out after that.

Congrats your efforts paid off.

To some degree Andres is right, for the bigger companies having passed your certification means a pay raise. But independent contractors like myself, my clients couldn't care squat. I did become MCSD.Net and MCDBA just for the fun of it but never really got any new business from it, since most of my clients are WOM.

I agree with Scott, a certification means academically you are qualified but you need to translate whatever you've learned into real-world. That's what differentiates the wannabee geeks to the real ones =)

I do see comments on the help wanted lists that say that an A+ certification is helpful (sometimes even required), so maybe having these certs will keep me from being disqualified for a job. I can't imagine that my Security+ cert is going to do anything to help me get a job, though.

If you have nothing or little to base a resume off of, certificates/degrees are all you have showing you have the discipline to complete them and get the basic knowledge. Good luck in the job hunt. I know that I've done a lot of many things but for the last ten years I've been either an Oracle software developer or Oracle/SQL Server DBA which narrows things down a bit more.

congrats! I work in the IT Industry, and certs are valuable at some places, but security is one of the fastest growing divisions. Good luck
